Cool Leopard AS1 (Australian version) 1/16 scale

Hi
My first post on the site, hoping you can help me out. I'm building a tamiya 1/16 Leopard 1A4 and am modifiying it to the AS1 as used by the Aussies. I found a ver recent picture and it looked amazing.

What I'm after is as much technical info as possible and images. Also if anyone has any current places to buy spares. Mine is very old, I bought it when it came out and have played with it as a kid and know I'm dusting it off for a rebuild.

Andy.

the Leo in the pic is the Special Equipment version. The cable for the equipment ran down that armoured snake looking thing on the glacis plate.

I was a tankie with 1st Armoured Regiment. I finished up as a Leopard crew commander and also a driving and servicing instructor to include all special equipment versions. Email me at aandshaynes@bigpond.com for more info.

cheers

Steve

You can find a lot of good photos on the department of defence's media photo galleries which should be of help. I think there is some on the battlefield portal as well (modelling reference photo website)

Thanks Tony, but that was Centurions. As it happens that is my fave tank, but saddly I don't have one at 1/16, just two in 1/25.

Of course it was!

As a meek offering of humility, I can only recommend Mike Cecil's booklet "Battlegroup Leopard". While not as technically detailed as Shane's Cent book, it does contain some excellent pics of the Leopard on exercises in the North.

Hello Andy.

With regards to your needing parts for your 1:16 scale Tamiya Leopard model, look up a company on the web called RAINBOW TEN. They are located in Japan, not far from the actual Tamiya factory and are, in fact, their parts agent.

You might need to provide them with the original model kit number and definitely the original individual parts numbers.

I have found their prices unbeatable when compared to the local Canadian and American Tamiya distributors, and their service and delivery times are excellent when ordering parts for my 1:16 RC Tiger I. Seems the locals here resort to parting out old stock kits and I guess they try and make up their cost loss in doing so, when a kit is parted out.

If you no longer have the kit instructions, you should also be able to order same from Rainbow Ten, so you will have it for future reference.

Hope this helps,

David

Hi

I like your tank very much, I've seen pics of it before somewhere else. I'm going through the process of scrath building all the modifications to make it a correct AS1. I've blanked off the left hand rangefinder and built the new parts for the turret roof. I've noticed the Smoke discharger guard is wrong and now have to rebuild that too. Will post pics when it is done.

Still more work to do. I've also found a good website for spares

Give it a look you'll be amazed.

Hi BSHELVIN.
Yes some pics would be good, I'm after the locations of the training sensors and the cammo blanket (if thats what you call it) attachment points. Did the Aussies ever use the Hapag/simfire unit on the barrel?
