Make sure it's enough for the flap too and don't forget the cloth to line it with and oh yeah, don't forget the button.

While we're on the subject of Battle dress, does M.L.U. have a resident expert regarding this subject? My WW II BD pants have both a map pocket and a pocket for the shell dressing. I also have a pr. of Korean War BD pants that only have the map pocket. I have also seen post war Canadian BD pants with neither pocket. Are there definitive dates and reasons that these pockets were dropped? Thanks!

Default BD without Pockets

Officer's sometimes removed one or both of the front patch pockets from their battledress trousers. This was especially true early during WWII while stationed in the UK while units were in training. They still prefered the smooth front as presented by the previous issues of service dress trousers.

Post war the practise could have been done by other ranks as they often retained their uniforms after leaving the service. These trousers then saw continued use outside the military. One reason you find a lot more blouses than you do trousers. Same thing applied to the German military where released prisoners continued to wear elements of their former uniforms.

Dave , this answers a lot except for the post war un-issued trousers that come up for sale sans pockets. As you stated, I'm sure there were lots of pants modified by their owners both during and post war but it seems that somewhere along the line it became official military policy to delete either or both of the pockets, if I'm not mistaken. In any event, make sure to bring a copy of "Weapons of the WW II Tommy" to College Station for me to purchase.
For your next book, how about "Equipment of the WW II Canuck"? I've got some Canadian kit to show you that I didn't see in your "Tommy" book.

Default Missing Canuck Bits

I've got a lot of stuff that was cut out of all three of the books due to space and format. Also due to me going on and on about something I thought was interesting but then decided most people wouldn't care about. This happened a lot in the weapons book and there were probably fifty pages of material cut out that was actually written and formatted.

A lot of the Canadian items were were also left out on purpose if they were not main stream type things. This was because of the large number of experienced Canadian authors, many on this web site, who have pokers in the fire with other projects that will likely include them.

Will definately have books at Brent's event and also at the Central Texas Militaria Show in Belton the week before. Jeep will also attend both as long as Double D still has space for me. Sure he will post in response

Clive or Ed might have an answer on the post war BD having pockets intentionally left off. Might be a sub classification in their uniforms regulations for field vs day to day dress trousers.

Default Takes all kinds of freaks to make up a world

And we're two of them

Don't know why he is upset about the cost of reserving a space for the vehicle to display inside since its a wash if he has even one friend as he'd be getting the free admission passes.

On a similar note, I just got finished making new rifle clip holders for the inside of the windsheild and on the cowling of my airborne jeep. Will be something new to see at the show since I won't have the radios mounted.

In Aust service, and I believe British and possibly Canadian service too, Officers were paid an allowance to have Service Uniforms tailored, they weren't issued kit off the shelf. As the item was specifically made to the Officer's requirements (within certain limits), they would have chosen the style and position of pockets on the trousers when being made.

Tony, your explanation makes sense. I've also heard that officer's were given a clothing allowance and often had alterations done professionally by tailors. Michael Dorosh mentions in his book "CANUCK...Battle Dress, Weapons, and Equipment" that officers had serge facing added to the lapels on their BD blouses to facilitate the wearing of a shirt and tie.
I picked up the Korean War set of BD at an estate auction in Vancouver years ago. They belonged to a Major of the RCASC and the pants had only the map pocket, most likely due to the personal tastes of the officer.

Dave, here's the deal. You know how we men have to keep the Women-folk happy right? Well, I promised my wife that we would go antique shopping in Salado this month and with my boy's soccer games this weekend and classes I'm taking on the Mar. 11-12 weekend and the Battle of the Siegfried Line on the Mar. 25-26 weekend, that only leaves the Mar. 18-19 weekend for the antique shopping.
But, and it's a really big but, I'm hoping that since Salado is only 10 miles or so down 35 from Belton that maybe, just maybe, Heather won't mind if I drop the CMP off at your show on the way through, and maybe, just maybe she won't mind if I put my BD on and pop up to the show, y'know, just to check on my truck. Just maybe?
So, I think what I'm trying to say here is: don't hold a spot for me if someone else wants it, but don't be surprised if I do show up, albeit with some frying pan wallops upside my head! (Karmen, don't you be sending Heather any pans in the mail, y'hear!)

Dave, let me make sure I got this straight. For a measly 10 bucks I get early entrance to your show for I and my wife giving me first crack at any and all deals, especially the rarer stuff that's going to get snapped up right away, and at the same time get to display my truck and kit in an air conditioned (it was 93 in Corinth day before last!), secure, insured environment while I'm enjoying the fellowship of like minded collector's? Where's the problem?

the problem is.....
1. that some people that live in 1960 dont understand that things cost money these days

and

2. for most people if i get a $10 comitment that means they may not back out if they plan ahead.

im just having fun with this

i love the fact that people are going to punish me , yes thats what 1 e-mail said "punish" me by not bringing a MB jeep to the show. ow well its going to be a great show even without the jeep, right now there are over 16 jeeps showing up... i think i will live
