Does anyone know if this is an original Chevrolet or Ford back rest from the rear body?

Wouldn't have a clue if it's original or not but it appears to be what is referred to here as a hungry board. These were used to extend the height of the cargo box sides thus increasing the load able to be carried.

Sorry, but they were not for increasing the load, but were used as backrests when the boxes for the rear wheels were used as seats.

I think it is. The Servicpub Factory photos CD has some pics. It shows the flat surface should go towards the inside of the body; Open end of the panel towards the outside. "clips/lips" with the curved end go around the top edge of the body on the oustide....lips on the inside are straight.

Indeed, they were part of the personnel variant (see my web site) of the 15-cwt truck - which was not more than a standard G.S. body with tubular superstructure and canopy and seats provided in the back for 4 to 6 men.

I know of only a few pics, see attachments. I think the back rests were made of wood on wooden bodies, and made of steel on steel ones.

I would be interested in a set of Gert's copies.

Learning all the time!
I was unaware of this variant with seating in the back and wondered at the lack of seating in the CMP range of vehicles. Contemporary WW2 American trucks seem to come with troop seating as standard, even the GMC tipper which makes for an interesting image when it comes to unloading.

There was seating for the 3 ton vehicles, including a folding seat that could stow away or went right down the center of the truck bed. In that case, you really had a bus load. The 6 foot long box of the CMP was really ill suited for carrying any amount of passengers.

I think that the boxes were not made by Ford or Chev but by a different group of manufacturers. Used in common amongst the truck brands.
