Dean:
Are you after the formation sign only? I think perhaps you're looking for the unit sign, or both.

The Toronto Scotish were part of 2nd Cnd Inf Div. Therefore the divisional sign would the blue rectangle with a yellow/gold maple leaf on it. Depending if its early war or later the maple leaf may have the C II in it in blue.
The unit sign Jon is talking about would be a white 64 on a black square background.

Re: AoS marking used by the Toronto Scottish
Hi Dean;
Was away most of today so wasn’t able to respond until now. Jordan has answered your question regarding the Formation sign used, but just a note regarding the Arm of Service marking used by the Toronto Scottish Regiment, from approximately May 1943 to February 1944 the Arm of Service marking used by the 2nd Infantry Division Support Battalion (The Toronto Scottish Regiment) was: Headquarters, 2nd Infantry Division Support Battalion (The Toronto Scottish Regiment) - 64 in white on a black background 4th Infantry Brigade Support Group (The Toronto Scottish Regiment) - 64 in white on a red background 5th Infantry Brigade Support Group (The Toronto Scottish Regiment) - 64 in white on a green background 6th Infantry Brigade Support Group (The Toronto Scottish Regiment) - 64 in white on a brown background 1st Battalion, The Toronto Scottish Regiment (M.G.) was converted & re-designated the 2nd Infantry Division Support Battalion (The Toronto Scottish Regiment) effective 1 May 1943. 2nd Infantry Division Support Battalion (The Toronto Scottish Regiment) was converted & re-designated 1st Battalion, The Toronto Scottish Regiment (M.G.) effective 24 February 1944, after which the Arm of Service marking used was 64 in white on a black background on all unit transport. Cheers

White 64 on black would designate Tor Scots Unit sign 1st Cdn Army, Jun 1944. White 53 on red would be 2nd Cdn Inf Div, as at Aug 1942 as well as Cdn Army May 1942. (Credit:Barry Beldham). May I assume that Tor Scots, being an MMG Bn would have been, at various times, slotted into 2 Div, as well as being allocated as an Army asset? Fascinating, eh?

Re: AoS serial for MG Bns
Quote:
Jon is correct, as/at May 1942 - AoS 53 in white on red background for Machine Gun Battalions, 1st, 2nd and 3rd Canadian Divisions. Also, as/at April1940 - MG Battalions were Corps assets and used either 34, 35 or 36 in white on a red background, this was changed to 45, 46 or 47 in white on a red background as/at 28 May 1940. As of 12 December 1940, the Arm of Service marking of 53 in white on red background for the Machine Gun Battalion in Infantry Divisions was adopted. Cheers
