Default WTB, linked 7.62

Looking for a belt of 7.62 Nato linked rounds for a 1919 gpmg. Specifically, deact ammo, not practice rounds. Would also entertain blanks.
Willing to horse trade, barter or pay cash as always...

Theoretically, linking the post war designed 7.62 GPMG links in a belt longer than 5 rounds is a prohibited device here in Canada. The long gun registry will soon be gone, but we have a lot more stupidity to sort out yet. You can also use the older 30-06 links from the GPMGs. They are exempt from the cartridge regulations. As well, they will be a better fit with any dewat or semi automatic 1919 you find, unless you go converting one to C5A1 configuration (very hard to do...the pieces are not common).

If you don't find any links closer to home, I should be able to fix you up from here. Dummy 7.62 is harder to find, I only have 20 or so rounds myself. If you know anyone who reloads, drill out a couple hundred spent casings, and have him put new bullets onto the cases. It'll be far easier than trying to find all those dummy rounds.

Thanks Rob, I never considered the stupidity of the FA with regards to display of dummys on a dewat..30-06 it will be.

http://www.collectorssource.com/plas...ook-great.html

Link above is Collector's Source in Canada. They have all plastic bullets that you could place into a metal or cloth belt for display. Got some a few years ago since even here in Texas, there are some venues where they don't want weapons displayed with demilled ammunition. Stuff looks good and is cheap.

Default 5 round belt

Rob, I heard that theory several months ago and just about fell off my chair.

I recently asked two gunsmiths who are approved to de-activate full autos and they had never heard of it and both started to laugh. I also asked an admin type at the OPP about it and she had never heard anything about it.
I was very concerned about it having many weapons that require belts for display purposes.

Maybe I am naive but I'm not sure this applies???

If am out in left field, somebody please straighten me out.

Al

So, to open up a can or worms here, theoretically, 50bmg belted would fall into the same category...
This becomes a real grey area as we are talking live vs dummy or deact ammo.
But, if you loaded a 20 rd magazine with live or dummy ammo it would be prohibited either way....mags over 5 rds are prohibited
7.62 single MG links on their own are OK up to 5 linked, after that they become a prohibited device because of when they were born...
.30cal, 7.92 etc is OK a mile long....
Stupidity

Here is the exemption from the magazine cartridge regulations:

"does not include any cartridge magazine that......is of the “belt” type consisting of a fabric or metal belt, is not a reproduction and was originally designed or manufactured for the purpose of feeding cartridges into a automatic firearm of a type that was in existence before 1945."

So first of all, it makes it clear that the law considers belts a form of magazine. It then exempts belts that were made for a gun in existence before 1945. It doesn't say that the belt was made before 1945....it could be 1980, but it can't be a repro. So, since a 50 cal was in existance before 1945, and the NATO links were made for that gun, 50 cal is OK.

But there was no 7.62mm version of the M1919 in 1945, so any belt made for that gun will not be exempt. Now for a 8mm or a 30-06 version, you are OK.

Lastly, you don't have to use those exempt original belts in the pre 45 gun to be exempt. If you were to own a more modern gun and could utilize those exempted earlier belts, you are good to go.

All that said, I have not heard of anybody being charged under these rules for belts. Then again there are few guns in Canada these days that will use them and can be shot by private owners.

Stupidity

I was both an FSET Instructor and a member of Western Command for years before I moved to Texas. I made up my own dummy rounds for resale, display and the classroom by simply neck resizing the cases and inserting a new FMJ bullet. Kesselring's in Burlington, Wa. sells FMJ bullets, ostensibly for the 7.62 X 39 cartridge which mike out nicely at .3105" and are perfect for inexpensively reloading both .303 British and 7.7 Arisaka dummy ammo. They also had bushels of 147gr. 7.62mm ball. I left the case undrilled and the spent primer in the pocket for the most realistic dummy ammo. I also used to sell belts with these dummy cartridges by the foot at HACS shows. I was never made aware of any government regulation regarding dummy cartridges...guidelines yes....hard and fast rules, no. Are there currently any rules in Canada regarding which iteration of dummy cartridges is required?
It's very rare for there to be any restrictions on either blank or dummy ammo, either belted or otherwise for display here in Texas. Of the 70 or 80 events I've attended in the last 11 years, the only restriction is, of course, no live ammo. A couple of cities don't allow any weapons, either mounted or dismounted in their parades, but they're in the minority by far.

Cheemo! Derek.
