Default REME 12 Base workshop

My grandfather used to talk about a place he then went to called Le Khroub, and working with REME. Here's the transcription from his war log thing:

att to A.F.W. Inc. 12 Base w/s REME 22 July 43

I'm assuming that translates to : " Attached to Army Field Workshop Company, 12 Base workshop Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers"

Is my translation correct?
Does anyone know where the REME 12 Base workshop was exactly?

Here's where I am currently on the matter:
I have searched online and have only ever found a picture of the tombstone of a guy attached to 12 Base workshop. I have found reference to 16 Base workshop in Le Khroub here:
http://www.track48.com/articles/rese...a75/index.html
...but nothing on 12 base workshop. My grandfather talked of being with a contingent of about 40 Canadians and being under British command. By the way, the Americans were so suspicious of them since "there were no Canadians in Africa" that one put a gun to my grandfather's head, thinking he was a german spy!

Any help is much appreciated!

Glen.

You could try this site (if you have not done so already)

http://groups.msn.com/REMEPastPresent/homepage1.msnw

There is a page in there connected to the R.C.E.M.E.

Glen,

According to the REME history books, you are correct about Le Khroub and 12 Base Wksp REME were situated there at the period / date you mention. Also at Constantine and with detachments at Bone. The part that throws me is "A.F.W."........I can find reference ot ABW, which was Algiers Base Workshop, which was linked to 12 Base Wksps. Hope this is of some help.

Try contacting the REME Museum at Arborfield.

Good idea. I just fired off an e-mail to the Arborfield museum, and I'll see what information that gleans me. Thanks for your help.

A.F.W. could be Advanced Field Workshop.
