Default Night photos

Hi all,

Was almost asleep then realized I'd forgotten to do something so had to get up ... looked out the window and saw it was very pretty and snowing out, so put on my boots and went outside to test out my camera. Strange but neat photo came out

Default storm

a few days ago we had a storm go through here dumping a lot of hail which made our farm all white, just like snow. We weren't home at the time but Emma was the hail was golf ball size. It devastated peoples gardens scared all the stock, flooded peoples houses and even left holes in the ground were the hail hit and also 20mm of rain with it. The rain has been very patchy and the ones lucky enough to get it are getting a green pick at the moment.

Where our son Michael is in WA they got a total of 240mm over three days with 180mm falling in one day and wind speeds up to 104 kms per hour.

Manitoba gets a lot of big hail, as far as I remember. And yes, it can sure do hell on crops, livestocks, and gardens

Lately, over here in Canada (and United States-side), the weather has been a lot of extremes. Thinking about the summers heatwaves and now the huge winds and rains that messed up the West Coast a lot, and I'm sure glad I did Calgary before this week, as the highway between BC and Alberta was closed due to snowfall and avalanche worries.

Colorado, USA, had a huge avalanche that buried a couple of cars and sent some over the edge. Its on the news today.

We are mere mortals trying to master the land, and mother nature is an uncontrollable and unpredictable force that can and does go "pfffffft" to remind us ... adapt, or else

Kinda hard to run a farm or plan a garden ... BUT ... did the hail knock off all of those nasty deadly read spiders around there? And how common ARE those particular spiders?

Default red backs

I'm afraid the red back spider is very common you only have to roll a log or something over to find them, they don't usually bite unless you touch them, but we're not sure if they infact might like canadians.

A bite from one of those little buggers can be bad news

I'm sure you will be safe, you can trust us

Default O.K. Geoff, no more redback talk...

We'll sing about them instead!

Quote:
Redback On The Toilet Seat (1972)
Ralph Ernest 'Slim' Newton

There was a redback on the toilet seat, when I was there last night
I didn't see him in the dark, but boy I felt his bite.
I jumped high up into the air and when I hit the ground
That crafty redback spider, wasn't nowhere to be found.

I rushed into the missus, told her just where I'd been bit
She grabbed the cut-throat razor blade, and I nearly took a fit.
I said, "Just forget what's on your mind and call the doctor, please,
'Cause I've got a feeling that your cure is worse than the disease."

Chorus: There was a redback on the toilet seat, when I was there last night
I didn't see him in the dark, but boy I felt his bite.
And now I'm here in hospital, a sad and sorry site
And I curse the redback spider, on the toilet seat last night.

I can't lie down, I can't sit up and I don't know what to do
And all the nurses think it's funny, but that's not my point of view.
I tell you it's embarrassing and that to say the least
That I'm too sick to eat a bit, while that spider had a feast.

And when I get back home again, I'll tell you what I'll do
I'll make that redback suffer, for the pain I'm going through.
I've had so many needles, that I'm looking like a sieve
And I promise you that spider, hasn't very long to live.

So ... I guess I'll be calling the insurance people tomorrow to find out about getting me some medical insurance while there ...

KEEFY ... loved the Redback tune ... also spotted the lyrics for the Kookaburra song ... I used to LOVE singing that one in grade school!!! I was always in the school choir but our music classes always sang that, along with Waltzing Matidla and others. Fun stuff.

In looking at some pictures of your Oz reedback spiders, I've seen similar looking spiders around here!!! I wonder if they're the same spider, or family???

Pictures of the redback. You really should have a look Geoff so you can recognize and avoid the little dears

Interesting that they belong to the black widow family!

Yes, it's a close relative to the black widow spider found in North America.

Then you won't be able to protect yourself from their bites if you don't know what they look like or about where they nest and stuff

And be sure you get some travel med insurance too and rae ready for an antivenum shot

How about some BC-ers talking about (mostly) our spiders up here By the way, there's a link for another forum with a video of a camel spider dining on a frog it looks like, check out the conversations in the forum just below the video
