DUKWs in the Canadian use.

Hi Guys

Does any one have pictures or can tell me where I can find out what markings would be on a DUKW in Canadian use in WW2?

Any help appreceicated.

AFAIK, most of the DUKWs in which Canadians rode were in fact operated by sapper units in the 79th Armoured Division. Perhaps someone here can confirm or deny this?

I understood Canada had 200 DUKWs, by some stats I found. Of course on the web so who knows.

During the period of the Second World War, there were no DUKWs held on establishment of the Canadian Army. The ones that did operate with Canadian forces in both Sicily/Italy and in North-West Europe were operated by either British Royal Engineers or by the Royal Army Service Corps.

Also, the use of DUKWs by the British 79th Armoured Division was very limited, the British made Terrapin being used within the division instead.

What was terrapin?

I do see pictures of a B.C. flood with DUKWs. Were they used after WW2?

Just type "Terrapin amphibious vehicle" in Google and the click the IMAGES button and bingo there it is! Amazing.

I believe one of the Western Canadian RCASC Service Battalions used the DUKW in the 1950s.

Three were still being used for flood duties in Manitoba until 68, and remained in war stock here until the early 70s. The old civvys at base maintenance would tell me about testing them down to the nearby Assiniboine river, and having to quickly turn around because they had no hull plugs.

The reports from the early floods of the 50s mentioned that the Navy was supposed to operate them, but after a while, it ended up being the RCEME so that they would be operated properly.

Two remained here in Manitoba at the local surplus yard until a few years back. I climbed into one back in the 90s, and the work ticket was still in the seat pocket for the 1968 flood duties. As I recall, the vehicles were marked to a service coy.

I Believe they were used off Ortona will have to double check were i read this.Many books many years.

A couple of other sites shows Canada some how got 200 of them?

So if we didn't get them during WW2? When did we get them? According to the pictures it says 1948? Were they war time stocks?
