hi everybody !
just joined and hoping to gain know how as i go along on restoring my 1943 C15a, i have taken the hubs off and about to start on the brakes but looking for advice, the shoes are ok with plenty of meat but the spring looks tired, dont know the condition of the wheel cyl as the brake pipes are long gone so is there a test ? as its the brakes i was going to take the wheel cylinders to a brake place for a check over and refurb, someone suggested a guy called Glen in brendale, brisbane ? the handbrake cable has snapped the end of inside the drum too so was going to collect the bits up and take them in to him, is there anything else worth checking or doing whilst i have each hub off so i dont get caught out once start running her ? cheers |

G'day Andy,
Welcome to MLU. You will find that there is no other site on the web where you will get the answers like you wil on MLU. Have you been a lurker? If you have, then you will know the ropes. Keep asking questions. You'll get the answers. Good luck with your C15A. Got any photos? Regards Rick.

thanks Rick,
been on a few times so thought about time I joined in ! Do have some pics so will post them soon, after the Forces had it, it went thru the Fire Brigade and then Rural Fire Brigade so its been demilitarised and had a water tank on it when i got her.. its stripped down to chassis cab now and the roof is off so fits in the garage to work on her.. thinking of restoring her as a timber/logging truck with small crane boom and winch as i can work her then as well as attend shows. |

Hi Andy and welcome. My blitz is also a '43 C15A and still working for a living. While you have the hubs off check all the seals. I, as many others have, had the master cylinder and wheel cylinders rebuilt with stainless steel sleaves. Unfortunately I wasn't thinking of restoring when I did the brakes so no photos to help.

Hi Robert,
yes, having the cylinders resleeved with Stainless seems to be the way to go, what do you reckon is a fair price is to pay for a wheel cylinder to be resealed and resleeved with stainless ? also, what do you work yours on or just general use ? |

Brakes
It's around ten years since I re built the brakes on my blitz,
The master cylinder was rebuilt including a new piston being made all wheel cylinders re built two new hoses from chassis to axle made front shoes had new linings bonded on new springs in front end bought enough pipe to make all new pipes and two liters of brake fluid and it all cost me $1.000.00. Because I live in the bush I took my parts to Repco in Wagga and they sent them to Newcastle as it was the cheapest option at the time. My blitz is still used as a spray rig although it may only do one more season as I have caught the bug to take it back close to original speck. Welcome
Gday Andy,
My name is matt baker i live in ipswich and i to own a C15A, i have recently removed the front cylinders from my blitz for resleeving, while the front hubs were off i thouroghly cleaned the bearings and CV joints and then inspected for servicability i found them to be in fair condition so i regreased and thru back in. Quite a few years ago i had a blitz front wheel bearing seize up on me on the road not a very pleasant experience, so if you have the finances i would suggest that you replace all of your wheel bearings that way once their done you have peace of mind if you intend on driving long distances. Where abouts in Brissy are you if you need a hand or a trained eye i can possibly give you a hand at some time, send me P.M. Cheers matt baker |

Bearings should be relatively easy to find.
Hi Andy
Welcome to the wonderful world of CMPs. Mat has a good point about really cleaning and checking the wheel bearings. What you should be pleasantly surprised about is that the numbers on the bearings are still in use and relatively easy to get through a larger bearing house. Do some checking on line first to find out what the price is. Some of the auto/truck parts places have a strange idea of what their markup should be. When you can probably buy from the same wholesaler they would use. Having the brake cylinders sleeved is the only way to go, the sleeve cylinders will out live NOS parts many times over. Have some sleeved cylinder on my HUP that are now going on 25 years just had to replace the rubber cups and boots, but the bores have no visible wear or pitting. Cheers Phil

Bearings & Brakes
Hi Andy - welcome to the mad world of Blitzs. I built a Chevrolet Blitz half-track, Project Phoenix, and during the course of that build encompassed the following.
Bearings - great supplier and know what they are talking about. Simmos Industrial Supplies PO Box 315 Beaudesert Qld 4285 Michelle Dyson – partner (does she know her stuff) (07) 5541-0533 32 Telemon Street Beaudesert Qld 4285 I had the master cylinder and four slave cylinders refurbished, new brake shoes on all four drums, brake hose and lines all for about $820. Will never have to look at the brakes again. My supplier also rebuilds the brake booster and he is about the only one in the country that does it. Bob
