Default MK1* Engine number

Hello all,

I am restoring a 1942 Mk1* Carrier with the aim of getting it road registered. Unfortunately the engine number has been removed so I am assuming it has had a replacement engine at some point. I want to stamp an engine number on it with the correct 'TL XXXX F' format.

Does anyone out there have a Carrier which is close to mine who can let me know roughly what engine number should be?

My Serial number is 5868 (T53664), lower hull number 4935 and upper hull number CB 4874. There was a Carrier over ion NZ which sold on the Carrier facebook page which was only 2 off mine but I don't know who it went to.

Many thanks,

Tom

Tom I cant help, but here is some other info.
Your carrier once belonged to an Alan Watson.
He sold it to Tony Renouf.
Tony died and Andrew bought it from Alan's wife.
Your "T" number is correct. There is another carrier here in N.Z. running your T number.
Ross Hopkins sold a Carrier to Wayne Douglas T53654. It is 10 off your number.
It was an uncut hull but I'm not sure it went with an engine.
This might be the one you are talking of.

I have a piece of a side plate with T53043. Its lower hull number was 4291.
I have repaired the floor from it and am building up a hull with lower number 4282.

The New Zealand owned Canadian carriers were all early ones and have had a hard life. It is unlikely to find a carrier here with an original number. There are only a handful of survivors anyhow.

Engine TL 10303 F likely belonged in a September, 1942 production MK-I*, with serial number near 10294.

Thanks Lynn that was the Carrier I was thinking of. Did he also have a British OP Carrier? Do you know if Wayne Douglas on this forum? It would be good to compare vehicles, as they are so close.

If Wayne’s Carrier has an engine it would be good to base my engine number on that. Else I will count back from the the number that Ross indicated was a Sep 42 production. Which assuming numbers were sequential would make mine TL 5877 F.

Thank you to you all.

An OP Carrier would be great for the living history group that I am part of. We are closely linked to the current Royal Artillery’s Historical Trust and Royal Artillery Museum and recreate displays with a full battery of 25 Pdr field guns and FATs.

We are potentially going to restore a Sexton at some point, for use in public displays, but the Historical trust need to work out the funding first. An OP Carrier would go well with the Sexton.

Unfortunately I’d already bought my Carrier from NZ when the OP Carrier came up for sale and couldn’t afford two projects.
