Hi Chaps:

I photographed this old timer at Riverside County fair in California. and he said he was from Alberta. Can anyone tell me if his hat badge represents a Highland Regiment? Carman I know between you Geoff and Mark one of you will come up with the right answer.

The badge on his balmoral appears to be a Clan badger<I had a clan Johnson badge just like it that I gave to my Air Force Pipe Major Kirk Johnson

Garry may be right about the clan badge..
But maybe the tartan would also help ..
He appears to be wearing one of the Buchanan tartans...and there were many versions....of most tartans....

I can't really make out the tartan because it's not really clear.But I'll bet the clan badge corresponds to his kilt..I'm going to refer to two Clan books I have & try to compare the yellow & green in his tarton.Can't promise a comparison but laddies,I'll try

Hi Norm,The tartan is Buchanan,The clan badge corresponds to your 1st picture- a right hand holding a crown enclosed within a wreath.The latin motto on the surroundikg belt is "Audaces juvo".The clan slogan is "Clare Innes".

I want to thank all you great guys on MLU that responded to my request for identification of the highlander and kilt that I posted. It is amazing the history that has evolved around the tartans of the Scottish Clans. Having served with a Highland Regiment I fully appreciate the seriousness with which they all take in the detail of their dress.
Thanks again guys, what a wonderfull source we have with MLU.

Geez I miss a couple of days visiting the board and you guys start talking about my family. The badge in question does look like Buchanan which is similar to the Johnstone (and all it's spelling variants) badge. Some Scottish histories say that Clan Johnson is a Sept of Clan Gunn. Norm I'm sure you remember Johnny Gunn CSM of "D" Coy, he took over after Fred Wigmore I believe. Anyhow I didn't meet him till after the war and he hated my guts. Come to think of it he hated everybodys guts except "Tiny" Burt. Other histories link the Johnsons with the McKays, my mother was a Mckay, do you think that may have something to do with my quirky nature?
