Hi gals and guys

In the same workshop where we reconditioned our Bren Gun Carrier engine was a home constructed transmission hoist. This was engineered from a rotary clothes line, these lines being an Australian icon as far as clothes lines of the world go.

I'll bet you've all seen these innovations. I'd like to see others.

Hi all
Well this thread didn't attract much response, however I've resurected it with this innovation we saw on a recent trip. As you can see it is a tractor cab but with louvres set in that are more standard in Aussie housing. The farmer thought I was nuts wanting to take photographs but this cab was so unique I had to capture it. In the mean time where are other innovations.

I seen several old tractors at clearing sales with this style of cab set up, maybe it was an available after market modification?

Love the clothes line hoist though, I'll keep that in mind.

Hi Ryan - the farmer said that a local company in the 50s were producing these but I can't remember what its name was. There is an MLU lurker out there who should recognise this particular tractor and perhaps name the company. The farmer also went to school with the lurker.

Hi Jif..

I couldn't help my self..It happens when I get wired on coffee or In this case I just finished a big cuppa King Cole Tea...
a touch of nectar from the Maritimes..
Has to be served in a titanium cup and stirred with a stick...other wise it would gobble up the utensils..

This isn't a workshop innovation but it is a novel use of sea containers. I took this photo near Dirk's place in Holland. I am trying to get Janet to let me build one of these.

As part of the process of cleaning up rims for fitting tires Rob created his elastic suspension system. Even lightweight (racing special eqipment????) HUP rims get tiring after a while.

Bob, I am not sure of the original purpose of this structure but there sure are a lot of possibilities. As you can see from the accompanying photo it is stuck in the middle of a couple of roadways. There is a balcony on the back but I couldn't get a good look at it. You could sure have a nice room on that third floor for your militaria collection and vehicle storage on the bottom.

Grant here is my solution to that problem.

Here is the rig I use to wire brush rims, paint them on and then to clean and trim the bead lip so that they can be mounted. It very simply is a large lazy-susan large plywood work surface bolted to the top which allows centering blocks to be screwed to it. It is useful for a lot of things as it will hold and allow rotation of large objects. In the top image you can see a 20” rim being painted with POR15 being able to turn the rim while painting works great for roller application as with the POR15 or with a spray-gun the results are usually very even and complete coverage. Its biggest use though is in clean rims by centering the rim with blocks and using a steady rest a disk sander or air grinder with abrasive wheel can be used to clean, sand, smooth the rims. By controlling the angle of your disk grinder you can get the rim to rotate slowly on the lazy-susan. (Of course you have to be careful not to let the rim spin to fast 50-60lbs of rim is mean when it gets up off the lazy-susan and heads across the shop)

I have also used a sandblaster on rims on the lazy-susan, though you have to be careful to keep the abrasive out of the roller unit.

In the lower image you can just see the roller units between the table top and the lower mounting unit. The roller unit is a heavy-duty cabinet unit.

Here is a handy trailer I made up to hold any CMP body. Cut the back part of the chassis from a pickup truck and bend the front in to make a tongue.
Weld channel iron to the frame the same width as a CMP frame and you have a mobile storage or work platform. Easy to move
also.

Jiff, she is my protection from the wolves and coyotes. I was installing my new mailbox on the road tonight in the dark (snow plow-1, mailbox-0) when the coyotes crossed the road into my bush. They are about 50 meters from me and howling like banshys. As much as I am not afraid of them, when they howl like that it scares the crap out of me. When I shine the flashlight on them they stop, look, and howl more.

Oh I know coyotes all right! When I was on the farm they got a number of my cats and lured one of my retrievers to her death underneath the wheels of a car. They had NO fear until they learned about guns...

We were always worried about them going after the horses, but it turns out that's the one thing they WERE scared shitless of. Still, there was always somebody close by with even just a .22 to frighten them off if necessary. When the pack started howling out in the dark, though, it was positively unholy...

In the process of dismantling a hybrid CCKW GMC/C60X blitz in the field there was a need to load the front axle on the trailer.
With the aid of a 200 litre drum , rear hub off the truck and a long piece of water pipe found nearby we achieved this goal .



Note that 2 studs are left in the hub to prevent the pipe from slipping off.
