Default HUP help needed

I've seen this symbol somewhere but no luck remembering.
It's very well preserved on my pile of HUP parts
Any one know about its representation?

You forgot to post a picture of your pile of parts!
Did you make it home with no problems?

The snail looking thing is actually the horns of a Ram. The rams head was on Western command vehicles, although not in that form. It was (and may still be in some form) the symbol of 1 Brigade (the Western Army) right into the Y2K.

The one you show is different than the normal Western command shield. It is likely a formation sign, but is not shown in the 1947 manual of markings. It does mention that formation signs should be a circle of 8" diameter.

I believe we have seen this sign before here on MLU, but I don't recall where.
