A Shameless Promotion for a WW2 Tanker
For those not in the know or who have forgotten, Robert C. Dick is a WW2 tanker who served in the Pacific, specifically Leyte and Okinawa. In the latter he was wounded and received the Silver Star in dismounting to save the life of a wounded infantryman. He plays that down, of course, but he's 85 now and still full of beans, living in southern Oregon. A number of years ago now we raised some money to get him a WW2 tanker's helmet - he'd lost his when he was wounded - and a copy of Hunnicutt's SHERMAN. My friend Mike Eastes presented it to him and somewhere I have the pics. Some of you will remember THAT.
Anyway, Bob's written a book of his experiences called CUTTHROATS which I had the privilege of reviewing in mauscript form. It's really quite good! Ballantine Books picked it up for publication in paperback; the book has been on the shelves for 11 days and has just gone into a second printing! I shall do my best to make sure that every manjack of you here buys one! Gotta love these old guys, eh? I'm gonna miss them when they're all gone. CUTTHROATS. It's a hell of a story by a hell of a man. Buy it.
