Default Ferret - request for help

Good Morning Everyone,

I'm one of the volunteer staff at the Lt.Gen Ashton Armoury Museum, here in Victoria BC - one of the vehicles we have here is an operational Daimler Ferret Mk 2/3 Scout Car that's in need of a new Master Brake Cylinder. Would anyone here on this board know of a source for one? I've tried Marcus Glenn in the UK, but he's been out of them for some time now.

Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers,

Chris Preston,

Chris,

welcome, a pesky Ferret you say? A brake master cylinder?

I would humbly suggest a call to Bannisters might get you something.

Alternatively I would suggest doing what I know I will be doing which is to source the appropriate seal kit and have a machine shop sleeve the master in stainless.

There is a company in the UK who makes a living from doing just that function, I can dig up their details if you like or you can let me know what you find out.

What else are you looking for or that you have to sell or trade that is Ferret related?

What is the hull number and what is the British army numbers from yours?

Robin

Default Ferret troubles

Hi Robin,

Thanks very much for your interest and help. At this time, I could use what-ever assistance you could provide (in looking for parts, etc), as I'm not having too much luck. We've already purchased an overhaul kit for the Master Brake Cylinder and done the refit with new seals and re-installed it, but it looks like it's too far gone, as after spending the better part of 2 hours bleeding the brakes, it looks like there's a brake fuid by-pass occuring inside the master cylinder, so we either have to locate a new or re-built one. Can you point me in the right direction for a source?

As for parts to trade/sell etc, the museum here is a small one, located in an Cdn Army Reserve unit drill hall facility (and a part of this unit), so we don't have anything to trade. As for the vehicle's history, as I understand it - it's an ex British Army vehicle that was turned over to the Canadian Army during the initial UN deployment to Cyprus in 1964 - it's a Mk 2/3, which we didn't purchase, as ours were to Mk 1 Liaison Vehicle without the Turret. I'll confirm the vehicle numbers and get back to you on which one we have.

As for the machine shop that reworks the master cylinder in stainles, if you could provide me with a contact (or a source for one that's available for purchase, that would be much appreciated.

Now we have to sort out an electrical issue, as the beast won't start, and we think there's a short somewhere in the starting system.

Cheers,

Chris Preston,
Victoria, BC

If no success you could try Tim Vibert, Empire trading in Winton Vic Australia.
http://www.timvibert.com.au/index.ph...inktext=Ferret

He mainly does Centurion tanks but also B series engines and the post WWII British armour.

Stainless sleeving of cylinders is common very successful process in cast iron cylinders, most specialist brake services in Oz have access to a company to do it if they don't do it themselves. It should be the same in Canada. This mob are in Canada: http://www.johnstuartpowerbrake.com/...Cylinders.page
