At work so cant post photo of complaisance plate .

details : Build date 18 02 1943

Engine number WR3860178

Chassis Number 2844400622M

Chassis Code W015 could be 3 as its damaged.

Barry,

"8444" in the chassis means the truck started life as a 15cwt C15A. The "2" at the start of the number means it's a 1942 model.....given the fact the actual build date is 18-02-1943, I presume the chassis was made in 1942, but the truck was assembled a few months later.

Please post some pictures of the truck when you have the time.

Alex

I agree about 8444 being the code for a C15A.

But..... your information about it having a winch means that some parts have probably been changed since it was made since I don't believe any C15A were originally fitted with a winch.
Possibilities include:
Data tags exchanged onto another chassis (all C15A had 101" wheelbase)
A C15A cab mounted on a CGT chassis (also 101" WB but usually with larger steering joints and 20" rims, has a winch)
A winch retrofitted to a C15A

Photos will help us to suggest which it might be. If you are having difficulty adding photos, this link may help http://www.mapleleafup.net/forums/showthread.php?t=19
Areas that might give a clue about the identity are the winch area and front axle steering joints.

Barry,

the late David Hayward registered a lot of Chev chassis and engine numbers. Most of his research can be found on our forum, but it is also displayed here:

If you scroll down to "1942 15cwt 4x4" you will find two trucks very close to yours. Both were assembled in Melbourne.

2844400679M ENGINE # WR3,860,220 FEBRUARY 24 1943 [MELBOURNE-ASSEMBLED]
I agree with Grant on the winch. If the owner says it's a C60L or C15A, than it could also be a rare C60L with winch retrofitted with a C15A cab.

Default Wo15

WO 15 is Battery Staff Wireless, a C15A with an Australian 2 or 2A body, definitely the winch is an add-on.

Also not all gun tractors had the 6" steering ends, in fact most if not all of the deliveries of those chassis to Australia were in 1942 before the 6" steering ends were introduced.
