Smile Bike photo

I think it was made to move ammo, radios or heavy kit with the drop container as part of its body. The engine could be a Ransomes or JAP with a pull start. The wellbike was found not to be to good at towing. Might be a prototype. Great photo.

Keith, the picture at the top of the thread and I think all the others on that sale have been lifted from Gavin Birch's "Motorcycles at War" book and are actually IWM images. They look like scans to me and I don't think that the selection is coincidental.

The first picture is captioned :- "MWEE demonstrate a range of mechanical devices which could be delivered to Airborne Forces on the battlefield via air dropped equipment containers. At the front is the Welbike secure in folded-down configuration within a container. Jarrow tractor can also be seen". (IWM MVE11152/2)

I recommend a copy of the book or if you want higher res prints, order direct from the IWM. I'll happily look up numbers for you.

Rich

Default Welbike???

Radek,
The pic. you posted is not a Welbike: it's an early Brockhouse Corgi Mk 1 with spoked wheels. Corgis were made for the post war civilian market using a design very loosely based on the Welbike. The most obvious differences are: frame, handlebars, fuel tank and engine. Unfortunately, quite a few Corgis have been painted olive drab etc. and passed off at vehicle shows as parabikes which, as far as I'm aware, they never were, or were meant to be.
Regards,
Rhett.
