Grizzly bear escapes from zoo

Massive hunt ongoing for 700-pound bruin

By Sun Media

A 700-pound grizzly bear was on the loose Wednesday in Niagara Region after escaping from a zoo.

The brown bruin bolted from Zooz Animal Zoo in Stevensville, between Niagara Falls and Fort Erie, late on Tuesday night.

Niagara Regional Police mobilized their Emergency Services Unit early Wednesday to establish a perimeter around the facility where the grizzly was last seen. No trace of the animal could be found.

With police, Fort Erie fire crews, a veterinarian and zoo employees tracking the bear, the Niagara County Sheriff's office launched a helicopter to conduct an aerial search.

Police warned residents in the area to be on alert for the burly beast and not approach it.

Anyone spotting the grizzly should call police at (905) 871-2300 or (905) 688-4111, ext. 2300.
