Mystery tool.....or not.

Hi

While doing some cleaning of the TQMS holdings, a soldier found a tool :

Illegible marking on the top:

No one knows what it is. We assume weakly that perhaps it's an AFV tool of some sort only because it was in the Armour School lines.

Any thoughts?

The first rusty line says "wear safety glasses"...

A track pin punch of some sort?

Thanks for confirming that. It does look like a track pin tool of some sort. With regard to the stamping,I thought that was what I was seeing in the first line too but figured if it was a 50s-60s tool, why would there be a warning like that on it!!!

I know it's not from the Leo, so perhaps the Centurion? Older?

Anyone else recognize it?

Darrell, here is what I am thinking;
track pin punch for something large like a Centurion.
Would it make sense to you that the punch has a wooden handle to keep fingers and hands out of the way while the other end is being struck with a sledgehammer???

That is exactly my thinking as well.

Funny how later interations of track kits don't have that stand off handle. I've been on the recieving end of some wild swings of the sledge with the old Light Track when I was Lynx Crew!!

Still looking for someone who can say for sure.

Just a question
does the tip end have a cup in it , as I have one like that with the cup for holding rivets in wihile being swaged

No, there is not any cup on the end; it's blunt.

I looked at the measureing stick thinking it was in inches no metric
The one I have weighs about 4 lbs and is cupped at the end to fit a 3/8 rivet to form the head into about 5/8 cap

It is a backing out punch and hammer..for rivets..Designed for backing out bolts, rivets and pins. Not for grouser pin installation or removal. The punch end is about the same diameter from point to body. The striking face of the hammer you use should be approximately 3/8” larger than the face of the backout punch.

Sometimes the big end is filled with sand or shot top absorb the shock..called a dead drop hammer design..
Armour or iron workers use them.

No luck matching it up with the Centurion Tool layout photo I have.

I suppose it could be for Bailey Bridge gear but am unsure. I may have to borrow it back from Jason to run over to the CFSME Museum.
