Default Request for carriers

Not sure this is the correct place for this but I have been asked to put out a request for carriers to attend Tilly sur Seulles on 8th June 2014 as part of the Normandy Commemorations.
As you may be aware there is a famous photograph showing a destroyed carrier in the centre of Tilly with a solder mine sweeping the area. The carrier represents a special symbol for the village which is why the organiser is trying to put together vehicles, with a demonstration of the carriers close to the crossroads. They are also planning a static presentation on the path of the 30th Corps from Gold Beach to Tilly for British Vehicles. Lunch will be provided for all vehicle owners.
If you would like to contact organiser let me know and I will pm his email address.

Nigel

Guys yet again I have been trying to get my 2 carriers to France for June . But I have just been informed they can't be driven on the road (see below ) . So it looks like it will be the Jeep again .

Shaun

I was meaning to answer this I have had about 340 e mails in since.

Problem, cant use the carriers on the road in France. For a parade maybe I could see, but otherwise they have to be transported.

If they arrive on the docks off the boat and not on a low loader they will not be allowed off the docks.

If they have been invited to Tilly they will need to send me a copy of the invitation provided and tell me that they can transport the carriers.

AS the vehicles are war material they need to be imported on a temporary basis. What we normally do is to declare all armored vehicles to customs which gives them a 30 day pass.

They have to be insured for road use and be registered with a log book/papers.

Sorry about this diverted e mail Shaun, but things are a little hectic at the moment.

kind regards

Gerald

Shaun I can't comment on the use on roads in France. But Gerald is wrong about the temporary import licence. We had that big hue and cry a few years back about us all having to obtain an 'OGEL' (Open General Export Licence). Which I obtained along with hundreds of others. I obtained mine under protest, as the whole thing is a farce, where our ex WD vehicles come into the same category as modern vehicles.
I wont express my views on this subject at length here. But certain countries have now been eliminated from the list of countries that an 'OGEL' is required for. I can't remember all the countries, but France and Netherlands are two of them.

I will email you on another matter that I don't want to print hear.

Ron

Thanks for that Ron, yes I have OGEL since they first came out . Just a usless piece of paper in fact the lady at Spire told me not to show it to the customs office as it might cause confusion , only show it asked for.

The disappointment is fact they can't go on the road in France . I have in the past done some charity road runs from London to Paris using CVRTs , there was none of these problems in fact I even had 2 police motorcycle excorts meet us at the bottom of the ramp off the ferry . They escorted us round the town of Calais , left us at the town limit and that was it for 2 days . We had loads of police go past but know issues .

Just a shame but I'm not paying the transport cost just to have them on static display . You can bet when I get over there in the jeep or Bedford there will be French armour every where !

Roll on September and the trip to Holland !!! That is going to be the high light of the year .

Yes I could write a thesis on some of the nonsensical red tape I've encountered.
As you might know I am organising a large motorcycle contingent for this year in Normandy. One of my motorcyclist booked his late ferry crossing with Brittany Ferries yesterday. Even though he never mentioned any military involvement, they asked him to declare if he would be carrying any deact weapons. New policy apparently. My advice to my lot is not to take any such items.
Re enactors and those with weapons attached to vehicles will need to take advice from the Ferry companies I guess. Ron

That's good advise Ron, I for have never bothered taking weapons to France , don't think it's worth the hassle taking deacts.

The rules have tightened up Lynn! I bet Granddad didn't have to produce his passport on that occasion either!

He probably never had a Passport. It was his "one shot" at tourism.

I was wrong about Netherlands. Here is an article about the OGEL amendments.
