Ghost ship "Alora" mystery 1943
Hi, I wonder if someone here might be able to assist me as to where to go to get further information on the ship my Grandfather took to go overseas in Jan. 1943.
I have recordings and letters of my Grandfather's memories and I sent away for my Grandfather's army stuff from the National Archives, so I have some information from there. I have also been looking at the CMHQ Reports online at the DHH: My Grandfather said the ship he sailed out on a fast lone ship called the "Alora". He said he did not go in convoy. I have found absolutely no record of any ship called "Alora". Is it possible that a ship changed its name on the outside to hide its identity? Embarked Canada -Sailing List No. 2305, Jan. 26, 1943 My Grandfather said he embarked in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Disembarked Feb. 4th, 1943. My Grandfather said he landed in Greenock, Scotland. I have looked here online http://www.cmp-cpm.forces.gc.ca/dhh-...SortOrder=DESC ...and found a file: CMHQ 110 which lists ships that left from Halifax. It mentions a ship "AT 35" that disembarked in the U.K. on Feb 4, 1943 called the Andes. Again, there's no "Alora", but it looks very similar and has the same amount of letters. It's possible my Grandfather's memory was mixed up by the passage of time? The document cites the information: "The above info was obtained from Strength Returns on Disembarkation (MFM 33) at Records Office and files of Movement Control" It seems to me like I should have enough information to do a search that will come up with something, but I just don't know where to start. ie. Do you know what the "Files of Movement Control " are and how I would access them? I just wish I could solve this mystery of the "ghost ship Alora"! Thanks for your help! Glen. |
