WS 19 query

guys this seems a dumb question but here goes.

what dates did they change Mk for the sets for the 19 set, my pal has a working Mk3 set but its no point me telling him to hold it for me if its wrong for my carrier ?

anyone able to advise ?

secondly can you use throat mic's with this set ?

I think the MK III's were first produced around 1943. Honestly I would stay with the MK III, the PSU is quieter and a better set overall. You won't get the loud humming noise with the MK III

And really the only difference you will see is the PSU power to set is a 12 pin instead of the 6 pin used on MK I and II's. And the label that says MKIII/date.

I have not seen any type of throat mic with 19 sets, I collect 19 sets/ancillaries and have never came across a throat mic for them.

Most of the throat mics are with portable small sets, 38 set etc.

ah right he wants 50 quid for the set but it has been butchered inside modernised somewhat so it may take some doing to get it back to correct specification.

Unless you're licensed to use it, a cosmetically correct set is fine for display. Who opens it up to look inside? Also what era are you portraying. Dunkirk & post would be WS11. WS19 MKII from 1942 until replaced mid 1943 with the MKIII.

MKII power supplies & dogbones are getting hard to find. The cables & control units are interchangeable between sets.

What are you getting for 50 quid? If the front panel looks original (no added holes or bits) the price is good.
It's worth getting even for trading material.

The chances of finding an earlier mark are probably also next to zero.

The examples which have been rebuilt post-war using plastic coated wiring are also best for reliability.

Very few carriers would have been fitted with radio any how.

yeah i will give him a bell. its the main set and the power unit however the power unit is home made it has a few plugs removed and modernised but he has the originals to go back on. my grandads fighting era was from 1942 - 45 prior to that he was training in callender Scotland whilst his regiment were reforming after the dunkirk fiasco. the carrier will be painted desert scheme post 42... to be specific its a late tunisian scheme which was carried over into Op Husky very similar to Nigel Watsons carrier but rather than the red terracotta disruptive it will be black / dark brown.......... so datewise looking late 42 into 43

i would like the crew to be able to talk to the driver (moi) using the set if possible.

Iam going around to his later so will take some pics of it for you guys.

BTW, I'm looking for text plates that go on the front of the PSU. I have got Italian on now and would like English text. My PSU is the late bulge type. I forgot the MK. Anybody got these for sale?

Does someone have an actual list of what a working WS 19 set would comprise in a MK 2 carrier canadian?By that I mean what are the proper junction boxes,cable layout call boxes headphones and hand mic"s etc.I would like to get a working set for my MK 2, but am unsure about what the proper bits to grab.Ther's bits here and there on evilbay. But no point buying the wrong stuff.Thanks for any info.

Thos diagrams are for the Mk1* Carrier. The Mk2 will be different for some stuff. As to what, Im not sure.

the Mk2 had the unit fitted behind the drivers side air ducting across the hull rather than on the track guard ala Mk1... other than that i dont know

I've never come across the military pattern but better welding supply shops and places that sell oxygen have very similar looking protective hose covers.

Hi Jordan. The outer sleeving is canvas. I presume as an aid to water proofing for open vehicles. I bought the leads from a fellow carrier owner years ago when I was completing my 19 set station. They are the exact length for my MK2. I recently just missed one of the little canvas covers for the switch control units. Here is a close up of the radio operators control unit. Try a google search on 'SENTIMENTAL JOURNEY' (Ian Durrant) Some of you will know him. He quite often has 19 set spares. Ron

Kev that might be a 19 set tray? I haven't researched the part number yet. Here are a few shots of the 19 set in my Jeep. There is only one central canvas strap which attatches to the plates that slot into the keyholes on the sides. So you would need four of these plates. One each end of the wireless and same on the PSU. I have had to make up this strap and I expect it should be tightened by knurled thumbscrew nuts. There is also a removable angle iron under the PSU. Dave, just for future reference, that isn't a radio tray persay. Its the mount for the WS#11 set tray.

"give up" That mount would then have the shock absorbers and then the WS#11 tray then the actual WS#11

Kevin. I don't think your tray you posted is correct for a UC. It might be more for a truck or ground stn. Usualy the handles were so that it could easily be removed. The UCarrier install seems to be bolted in and not easily removeable.

No, as Jordan has said it is for the ground/truck mount. It was often substituted for carrier set 23 which was the more common one used. It was fitted to a table using "mountings, carrier, no.1" which had a quick release mechanism to rapidly release the set.
