Default Anti-Static Straps on SMPs

When were these straps adopted for use on SMPs?

The first time I recall seeing them installed was on Chev 5/4s, CUCVs and CJ7s.

Of course, after that they were SOP for MLVW, LSVW etc.

Since they were used on 5/4s (roughly same time period), would it have been a retrofit to have them put on M38A1CDN3s?

They were on all the wheeled SMPs, including the M38A1 Jeeps. They are a commercial product made by GATES, who would mostly be known for rubber products like heater hoses and fan belts. They seemed to come into play in the late 70s, although may have been in use earlier.

They are mandatory for any vehicle transporting ammunition. Back when 2VP was still in Winnipeg, and would come out to Shilo to use the training area, they would often be excluded entry from the ammo compound until they came over to see us at the RCHA for a ground strap.

I used to have one on my Jeep, but won't anymore. You will have guys honking at you, trying to pull you over, and telling you at the stoplights that you have something hanging from underneath your vehicle.
