Default New T16 Universal Carrier

Hi,

Just bought a T16. It's a Swiss conversion, so lots of changes.

Where is a good source for the manuals?

I will post some photo's this week. At the moment the biggest job is the rear axle. The original axle was removed with a cutting torch! So need to get some new plate cut and welded in. The hard part will be getting the correct curve profile on the side plates.

Regards Chris

Welcome aboard!

Best place for the T-16 manuals is Portrayal Press http://www.portrayal.com/ but you need to hurry as they are closing down. Shoot them a message at their web site and they should be able to give you a price with shipping for all the wartime manuals as copies.

Also good luck getting that rear armor welded up for the differential to bolt back up. Seems a lot of the carriers had that section blow torched off as it was the fastest way to strip the rear end off since it saved having to turn bolts. A lot of bogie suspension units were similarly destroyed as a fast way to remove road wheels.

Hello Chris and welcome. As for the differential mounting I have been there!
My way was to blank the hole and bolt pattern and then place and trace.Cut with a plasma arc cutter to match and weld.

I had believed that mine was bad!!I stand corrected!Good luck!I had the blank plates done with a water jet and I was then able to do the tracing and cuts on all three plates.

Hi Chris,

I would advise you to first repair the hull and then have it shotblasted. This way the welded in bits have the same finish and you will not get rust on the hull while you are repairing it.

Do you already have a rear axle? You might want to ask this company here: http://www.showroom.milweb.net/produ...3&item_id=3716 The name of the company is Groenewoud and they are located real close to me. If you want I can transport an axle and/or tracks to the UK for you. I recently aquired a Daimler Armoured Car I will be collecting early next year. Also bringing an UC axle for Kevin Powles then.

Cheers,

hi Chris and welcome to the T16 owners club!! I had not been on the forum for a while so had missed your post. I wish you luck and good fortune with the restoration and of course any advice you may need feel free to ask me as I have just been through the same exercise myself, although mine was probably a bit more complete it was pretty rusty in the hull. I dont know how to link my restoration story, but here goes http://www.mapleleafup.net/forums/sh...eferrerid=6566

I look forward to following your progress.

Default Rear axle

Hi,
I do have a very good rear axle and hopefully enough track.

Have cut off all the Swiss bits now, just need to work out what Brit bits need welding back on.

I need lots of bits for the carrier, but some of the big bits include;

2x wheels
Fuel tanks
Radiator
Oil coolers

Regards Chris

Your photo 014 shows the gunner side of the vehicle and it still has the Swiss wireless mount. Don't know what type they had postwar but that mount won't be good for anything to you and needs to go in the trash with the other Swiss parts you cut off.

You can see a partial list of things the Swiss removed from the carriers after they got the from the British on my vehicle restoration thread:

http://www.mapleleafup.net/forums/showthread.php?t=9136

What type wheels do you need? There were straight spoke early on, two types of curved spoked wheels and then the solid disc pattern.

Hi David,

The radio tray has now gone. Finished remove the last Swiss bits today!

The wheels have curved spokes, I didn't know there were 2 types. I will post a pic of mine.

I've also got the curved spoke pattern. Both types look the same on the outside as mounted but the later pattern has what look like reinforcements and serve as mud/snow slingers. They might also have been used in conjunction with the later hulls which had scrapers on the rear. My hull never had the scrapers but I have a mixture of both types of the curve spoke wheels.

I have a few spares but shipping to the UK would make them cost prohibitive I'm afraid. Sure you can source some over there though is needed.

Ray in New York has a later hull with the scrapers and disc pattern wheels. Maybe he can post a photo showing them for reference.

Chris,
I have a partial carrier that I am willing to part out. It currently has the rear armor (uncut). It has the half moon shaped armor and uncut lower rear.
Please Pm me if you are interested if purchasing the rear armor. I could cut the entire back end of the carrier off if you want.
Thanks,
Bren
PS Your new carrier use to belong to me several owners ago. I spray painted the TD number on the side to peserve it for the new owner.

Brennon,

Do you still have the front armor for a T16? One of ours had a big section cut out, to include the gun port and hatch.

Chris. Just been thinking about your rear mounts that you need to repair. Personally speaking when it comes to he job I would get the tub perfectly level then offer the axle up to the hull making sure it is square and level then take your measurements and distances y thoughts being that if the hull is not cock on and the axle is bolted in even just slightly skew, the lower hull may fracture or at very least pull the weld apart. Finding an uncut hull without its axle may be the route you can make patterns which you can place onto your hull so you fix the bits in the right places.

Just thinking out loud.

No,
The partial carrier that I have only has the lower.
It was an old scat from seco.
They cut all the upper armor off.
Sorry I can't help you.
All lower armor is still available.

I suspect that the rear dif and brakes etc have been refurbed in the past or could be NOS.

Everything is as new, the brakes shoes etc are as new!

Picked up a nice 19 set and some NOS rear lights.
