Default 12,000 Australian Army Vehicles up for sale

Press release today :

To: Roberts, Brian
Subject: Minister for Defence Materiel - Disposal of up to 12,000 Army Vehicles

Disposal of up to 12,000 Army Vehicles

Minister for Defence Materiel Jason Clare today announced the release of the Request for Proposal for the disposal of up to 12,000 surplus Army vehicles and trailers.

Last month the Minister announced reforms to the disposal of military equipment.

Part of these reforms is the disposal in bulk of up to 12,000 Army vehicles.

“By disposing of this equipment in bulk, it will increase the amount of revenue Defence can raise and reinvest in new equipment,” Mr Clare said.

“The money raised from the sale of these vehicles will be invested in Force 2030, with one option to fund simulators used for training that will reduce the wear and tear on Army vehicles.”

The Army vehicles that will be disposed of are non-combat vehicles such as Land Rovers, trailers, Unimogs, trucks and truck-mounted cranes.

The vehicles will be progressively replaced by new vehicles under Defence Project LAND 121.

The disposal will take place over the period 2011 – 2020.

I received a phone call for the ABC Radio in Perth and they have asked me to do an interview at 7.20pm, EST tonight. They want to know about the types of people who collect military vehicles.

If you are after a date for the disposals, according to the press release, it will be over a nine year period.

Default Hey Ian?

Are they going to sell things like Tyres at some of these.

Nothing too specific...just some 9.50 X 16 inch NOS would be nice...

The interview went well and went for nearly 10 minutes. I was able to give our swim-in at Corowa lots of promotion and here are a few things that were talked about:
1. My associations with military vehicles where I talked about growing up in Victoria and attending many functions as a child before moving to Sydney and continuing to be involved and .
2.There was discussion on my father and when he commenced collecting vehicles. I explained how he was a house remover and he still has the original Blitz he started driving at 14 years of age when working for his boss. I also mentioned his RAAF Blitz ambulance and how he had this before he met my mother - This was his first love and my mother was his second love.
3. How I knew about the sale of the vehicles - I mentioned seeing information on a forum posted by Warren Brown. He said "Is that the famous artist." I talked about Warren's longterm interest.
4. He mentioned a number of military vehicle museums over in Perth and across Australia. I gave the Bandiana Army Museum a plug as the best I had seen. I also mentioned John Belfield and his museum. (There was a mention of Australia's Oldest hoon.)
5. He asked if my father owned a tank and I said no but I knew a number of people who owned tanks and this led onto a conversation about Year of the Tracked Vehicle at Corowa and how we had a Russian T34, 2 Stuart Tanks and various other armoured tracked vehicles, some of which were able to drive on the road. He talked about running over cars with a tank so I mentioned Ernie Dingo in Warwaick Lord's tank near Mudgee.
6. I mentioned that the vehicles that are being disposed of will be collectable and it will be interesting to see if they last as long as some of the WW1 and WW2 vehicles we have at Corowa which come from all parts of Australia.
7. I talked about having a number of people from overseas who attend our event at Corowa and people who are interested in collecting military vehicles come from all walks of life.

Well done Jan

As they say in business. "It pays to advertise". Was your interview live on air or will it be aired at a later date so we can tune in.

Cheers

There were lots of thoughts going on in my head when I received the initial call about the interview but I decided most of the military vehicle collectors are a good bunch of people so I was able to make a number of very positive comments. I am interested in getting some people's views on the topic what sorts of people buy military vehicles ?
Our new editor of the KVE Newsletter, Richard Farrant would like to include some of your comments. Please send me an email with your suggestions or put a post on here. Tony Elliott and Keith Webb emailed me some interesting comments.

OK Jan,
Since childhood I have always hated seeing worn out trucks sitting in paddocks, cast away after a useful life. Combine this with a love of 4x4's, an interest in history and a maintenance background, it is no surprise that half a pre loved Blitz turned up one day.
Rich.

Default Military Vehicle Collectors

Hi Jan - the above are no different to people who collect Jaguars, Holdens or whatever marque you care to nominate. All have their niche in our contemperory history. Other than a handful of OTT re-inactors, I have yet to come across a military vehicle collector who thinks he is Rambo because he has a military vehicle. A lot of our type of collector do so in memory of relatives that served in the various wars and campaigns.

Default Army landrover sale

Hi Guys

I just received my June 2013 copy of, "The Soldiers Newspaper, ARMY" It carried a full page advertisement for ex Australian Army Landrovers for sale. Some poor digger must have been on punishment duty and spent hours cleaning and polishing this one in the attached photograph to make it look appealing to prospective buyers.

Cheers

Tony

Default Inquiry

Wow, would any of my Aussie MLU members be interested in picking up one for me if I could win a bid? Would be one of the 110's to add to my collection. I would handle all of the logistics for export to USA, except maybe some signatures required on your end, plus would throw in some AUD for time, effort, expenses and fuel..

Cheers,
Lance

Default sale

the onus is on the buyer to make sure of what you get, asked local unit if any of their vehicles are on the list [ ARN is listed ]. the mogs are nearly as cheap as L/R,s. buyers premium and GST can add 20% to price. If you want tri axle semi trailers check Johnsons auction against the Army, lot cheaper. The GVM on the Macks seems low because they are not Tractors, but the mog is still a great buy under $10,000.

This is now the 4th auction held in Sydney, and there has been one held in Darwin also. Concurrently with his Sydney auction, there are also others going on in Brisbane and Perth. The auctions will continue throughout 2013 around Aust, but they will not pre-release dates or catalogues beforehand. There will be more, "Just keep watching" is the motto, until you see something you must have!

I realise that it is in the realms of speculation but having read the 4WD Action article I'm left wondering:
Would Mike Edwards have been ok if he had been driving something other than a Land Rover when the tyre blew out on his way home from Corowa?
I also understand that the type/make of tyre involved had a bad reputation with the Australian Army.

Any comments welcome as I think this topic needs more of an airing. If there are problems with these vehicles and or tyres they are best brought into the light of day before some other unfortunate soul pays the price.

As an aside, I hastened to put my new tyres on the front of my Dodge 6x6 as a result of watching a couple of videos on You Tube showing horrific accidents as a result of tyre failure. That was not long before Mike's accident and we had discussed tyres and tyre failures in his tent at Corowa.

If the discussion takes off it can be moved to a more appropriate location.

David

If your looking for ex-Brit landrovers near Suffield Alberta, look up the Public Works and Crown Assets web site. They have been hiding there off and on for the last several months. Ewen

Not at all Tony, that poor Digger would have just use the lazy CLP option! Spray it on and wipe over. Works well until the dust settles.
