Default Demolition

I have forgotten to mention it before but the WIX Filtration Plant (Dana-WIX) that closed November last year has been demolished.
This was the AC-Delco filter plant from 1951 until about ten years ago when it was sold, having been a Delphi (GM subsidary) plant for some years. In that building was invented the screw-on canister pleated paper oil filter that we all take for granted now.

However its real claim to fame was that from February 1940 until 30th November 1940 it was the Canadian Mechanization Depot, or at least most of it was, since it was owned by General Motors Limited and had been built from January until October 1938 for Chevrolet, Pontiac, and Oldsmobile cars and Chevrolet trucks. The land and building had been leased from the Southern Railway, and then GM Ltd sub-let to the Canadian Government. 4,000 + Chevrolet cars and trucks, plus Ford trucks were assembled in the CMD in 1940.

The plant was re-opened in stages from 1947 onwards and became a rebuilding facility for former military vehicles, for further service or re-sale.
