Default WW2 history in Lithgow...

... comes and goes.

Just as we've nearly completed the restoration of the 3.7in AA gun emplacements at Lithgow, comes the news that Australian Defence Industries will be rationalising the SAF site by demolishing some WW2 era buildings, starting with the large building known as the Bren Section. This building housed the WW2 production of nearly 17,500 Mk1 Bren guns, and was later used through the '50s and '60s for the refurbishment and conversion to 7.62mm programmes.
The AA gun emplacements have been cleaned out, signage in place and three of the four gun pits have now got their 3.7in guns back. As an aside, does anyone have a spare 3.7in gun to fill the fourth gunpit?

Default Full 'o muck

In these pics you can see a "tide line" on the brickwork of the pit walls. These were full of 60 years of dirt, leaves and sheep droppings. They have been spotlessly cleaned out by hand by volunteer labour provided by the Federal Government's Green Corps Scheme. Bravo!
