Default Connection situation here

is that connection speed has never been a problem.
PM's have usually arrived in a reasonable time.
However sometimes I cannot get on to MLU at all. Other web sites are ok but not MLU. I can be locked out for several hours at a time... I have rang/emailed Keefy & he has been able to get on tho MLU while I cannot...
My website is hosted in the US & I can access that OK while being locked out of MLU.
I hope these clues help you Jiffy in tracking down that rascally fault!!!
(When I say "locked out", I mean my browser cannot locate the URL)

Yes, I can be excluded while others interstate still have access - some vague thing happening with routing I suppose.

The main problem still seems to be the attacks by the Zombies*. Makes you wonder whether there is something else on the particular server which is high value for spammers to be so constantly hitting.

*A zombie is a computer (could even be yours) which has been taken over by malware and used by others, usually organised crime to make concerted denial of service attacks on particular targets.

Last night I got the email notification of someone replying to a thread. I used the link on the email and the thread appeared no problem. When I clicked forum at the top I couldn't get anything.
Today access is okay but it is painfully slow.

I've been on the MLU link since yesterday morning with little trouble - occasionally a bit slow, that's all. I haven't tried the Tortuga link yet today. I did send a couple of PMs last night and they were slow, though.

Keith may be right in that something has been at the server. I suspect the admins have put up some electronic fencing of some sort, because my daily spam ration has dropped to virtually nothing - an indication that they're blocking all but essential traffic, which may indeed cause delays. I'll see what I can find out.

I'm still only getting in the front about half the time but can always get in through the basement so I have never had total denial of access.

Default Correction...

Slowing down a bit right now... I do know that overnight we've had a series of assaults by spammers trying to get in. I have 400 banned email addresses recorded to-date, so you know what level of traffic we're getting; the one thing I can't tell you is how many of those keep trying, but I'll figure out a way. If they are bombarding us with membership requests, that would slow things down remarkably.

I'm aiming for this coming weekend to take this down and upgrade (finally!). Hopefully that will make a difference as well. I'll keep you posted as we get closer and I firm up the arrangements.

Jif

Tortuga just worked ticketty boo for me ...

Default MLU connection problems

The number of "guests" has dropped rapidly, as has the speed at this end now.

Very quick opening up the the front door when I first knocked on it, but now slowed considerably.

I think the number of guests sometimes is actually one guest crawling quickly through many of the forums links, sometimes hitting the same link again and again, sometimes mili-seconds apart and registering each new hit as a new guest logging

Default MLU Link

Is anyone in on that right now? I just got to work and it's now giving me a DNS error again. It went bad yesterday just before I left, but was working fine until this morning. I need access to my control panel to zap the bad guy, but can't get it without the MAPLELEAFUP.ORG...

BTW, I've decided that if this won't be solved by an upgrade, I'm going to move everything, lock, stock & barrel, over to a new provider. I'm getting mad now - it's been a month.

Default Access

It has loaded very quickly through

http://www.mapleleafup.org/forums/index.php?s=

for me each time I have asked today.

Access to PM's still seem slow though.

Paul.

Default Goddammit!

MLU was working at home... now another bloody DNS fault. Same-same for everyone else?

New provider time indeed, methinks. Will advise, but you guys keep me posted on access stats, please!

Default Up now...

...and faster too. Somebody's doing something, somewhere.

I've left my provider a long and polite-but-firm ultimatum - sort this out and get someone to contact me ref upgrading my service, or lose me as a customer after five years. I will keep you advised.

Default Slow connection times

Geoff,

My first attempt today, through .org threw up "Page cannot be displayed"

The second attempt opened up through .org, but it is very slow opening the Forum pages. PM's seem to be even slower.

I checked movement between pages on posting the last message.

It took 35 seconds to move to the "Thank you" page and a further 25 seconds to go show the message.

Thanks Paul... it was quick enough getting here to read this, then 2 mins 45 secs to get back to the main page by simply clicking on the logo up top. This is unsatisfactory.

Please keep monitoring accordingly, thanks. I want some Aussies looking in here too!

Default Computer speed and connections..

Jif..
I have been following this thread and haven't had any problems until this morning..Couldn't find the page..For about 1/2 hour..But then it connected..You may have been working on it ..But my computer has 2 gigs RAM and a 320gig Hard drive and a dual core 4000+AMD 64X2 processor so is preyyt quick..and I am on Cable DSL..
I wonder if some of the problems stem from under powered end users machines..??
Normally my connections come right up..

Today for the first time at work I'm seeing slower than the usual lightning fast entry from the contents page to the forum. Most recently observed 1315 Eastern (Canadian) Standard Time. Home still fails to enter via .org more often than not, but tortuga seems reliable. Thank you for the work you are doing to sort this out.

Grant

Alex, I have pretty near the same puter setup as you (mine's a 4200+ AMD) but I'm on dial up. I hook up through http://www.mapleleafup.org/forums/index.php? and it never hooks up the first try. I have to click on Netscape 8's retry button anywhere from two to fifty times before it'll ffind the page. Once I make the connection everything seems to work OK though.
