General Motors seeks world domination
Well, it may have missed it's chance at that, but it tried hard in the 70's.
As any Aussie will tell you, GM-Holden had an advertising success in the mid-70's with their jingle "Football, meat pies, Kangaroos and Holden cars" All Australian, catchy and award-winning. But wait a minute, Chevrolet in the US actually comissioned the tune to the words "Baseball, hot dogs, apple pie and Chevrolet", and it was also used in South Africa with the words "Braaiveis, rugby, sunny skies and Chevrolet" (Braaivleits is Afrikaans for BBQ). What world markets did GM re-write this advertising jingle for? What other examples do MLUers know of? Was UK "Football, grey skies, Monarchy and Vauxhall cars"? Or Canada "Mukluks, snow snakes, two-fours and Pontiacs"? |

Damn that General Motors - we should never have promoted him beyond Colonel.

I was in New Zealand for 6 months during the 70s and they also had a similar ad. I can't quite remember how it goes but I think Kiwis & Fish & Chips were involved.
