Default brengun carrier sold at auction

LP2A carrier owned by Fremantle museum was sold to the winning bidder for $23000 at the Perth Legacy Centre Auction last sunday 22 oct 2006
The carrier had been restored by Jack McRoberts from Perth some years ago and has been restored to almost original. It is a beauty and is painted in Desert camo.
A father / son team from Perth were the winning bidders and they had a lot of competition.

Ron,

Geof will probably post a pic of the finished article, but here is one of the recovery of this carrier from its resting place of around 30 years. The bottom of the track had been in the same place for so long that it broke rather than wind around the drive sprocket. Rust won.

Default Carrier sale

Well done Jack. A great effort and determined amount of man hours to achieve the end result, a very complete aussie carrier in true style. Not too sure about museums sellling stuff... sits a bit strange with me.

Smile Hi

Hey guys,

My father and I where the buyers of the carrier from the Freo Museum.

I know what you mean Wayne, but at least it's staying in WA.
They advised that they where selling it due them already having a fully restored carrier built locally in Fremantle at the State Engineering Works.

I've posted a couple of pics on my site at :
www.mullaloobeach.com/Aust-Carrier

How many working carriers are there in WA?
It would be great to get them all together like they did over east.

Default Curious about carrier...

Rohan...
Beautiful carrier...but could anyone tell me why all the towing eye's...hooks...holes..are on the front..???And no provisions on the back to tow anything.....
In other words was the carrier only the tow-ee and never the tow-er...???

Default Rohan Carrier

Hi Rohan and welcome
I'm not sure if I have your Carrier details on my database, in any case could you forward them please. At a rough count I have at least 10 Carriers listed for WA but many of those need to be confirmed.

Alex if you look carefully there is a towing eye under the rear numberplate and a tow hook down under.

Bob

Thanks Bob..
Good eye..
I sort of thought it funny when the tow rings didn't jump right out..
More used to seeing a pintle hook..

Sounds reasonable...I should of thought of that...except that when those little suckers get bogged down they ,as any other vehicle, go in nose first...
with the front hooks burried I figgered there had to be some way to pull them out..

hello there rohan
yea mate i know what you mean but its like falling in love with a pretty girl , if she sparks up and goes alright it then who cares.
congratulations to you and your father you have definately got yourselves a treasure there and we will have to organise a get together. i heard there is a bit of a show of military gear at the corrigin dog in the ute weekend so maybe that might be the go.
you need to get some space to really try it out as they are good fun to drive and take a bit of skill to handle but they are the best fun once you have worked it out.

cheers

geoff

hi there Jack
top job , you have really put the hours in there . great to see the before photo it shows how much work was done. incredible to still see the original camo paint on it though, it must have been well preserved.
i have still got the photo you sent me 5 yrs ago, it really come in handy and we used it to copy the paint work and stickers on our first carrier .

cheers

geoff

sorry about the photos but i am having trouble attaching them even after i have reduced them to under 103kb

Hi Geoff, Rohan, Ron, Wayne etc,

One of the interesting aspects to this carrier is the fact that when recovered, it had the letters MX marked on the outside of the driver's side armour.

The painting was done with very large lettering as shown in the photo - presumably to be very identifiable. I re-drew them in black but they were originally in white.

The only thing I could dredge up was a reference to the Middlesex Regt (mainly from Korea when they were operating with 3RAR) - their abbreviated title was MX.

However I doubted there could be any link between the MX Regt and an Australian carrier and when I was talking to Wayne H today, he mentioned the letters could stand for Modified eXperimental. Meaning that at the stage when these letters were painted on, the vehicle carried some form of experimental equipment.

Other than that, I don't know what the significance of this lettering really was - a military mystery ??

Hiya Ron,

Haven't really got too many photos of the restoration in progress - however a couple that I took showing the dramatic change from 60 year old paint to a newly primed hull, are attached.

This part of the restoration process would be fresher in your mind than mine I guess.
