Default 166th (Newfoundland) Field Regiment

I've been reading some history of this regiment in WWII. I understand it was part of the 1 AGRA of the 1st Army and went to North Africa. Later, it was reassigned to Montgomery's 8th Army during the Italian campaign. Does anyone know what unit numbers this regiment would have used with the ist and 8th Armies or what shoulder patches they would have worn?

Thanks

Hi Chris;

This may be a bit late, but in answer to your question:

While part of First Army in North Africa their AoS Serial was '203' in white on a red over blue background square (with white 2" inch bar below denoting Army Troops).

While part of Eighth Army in Italy their AoS Serial was '203' in white on a red over blue background square (with white 2" inch bar below denoting Army Troops).

While serving with both Armies, they carried a Newfoundland Caribou head badge below that of the AoS plate on their vehicles.

They wore a Newfoundland flash on the shoulder below which they wore the Formation Patch (First or Eighth Army), below which they wore the Royal Artillery strip of red/blue.

Below is an example of the 'flashes' worn while serving with the Eighth Army and of the Newfoundland Caribou head badge carried below that of the AoS plate on their vehicles.

Hope this helps.

Cheers
