Default 12V GM Coil

Another dumb question. I went to my local UAP auto parts store to get a 12V coil for a GMC electrical system. First thing the guys asks is "internal or external resistor?". I've only ever bought just plain 'coils' and have been been using my stash so this is the first new one I've needed in quite some time.

There is no resistor in a GM ignition circuit, so it follows I need the one with the internal resistor? Or maybe the one without? Did my old old 'regular' coils have a built in resistor?
