Is it better to have hard track wearing down soft pins?

No, Terry. The pins are hardened and the S.G. iron link works well with it. A soft pin will go out of shape fast (stretch)
The pins are not hardened at the ends to allow forming and (when required) the breaking off of the head.

I know it's difficult in the situation where you were, but you can make breaking the tracks so much easier by moving the machine so the effected pin is between the sprocket and the rear road wheel. Alternate the front idler and the front road wheel. Also by backing off the front idler you remove the tension from the track making it easier still.
Hope this helps
