Default Oshawa WW2 Buildings Disappearing

Many of the buildings that figured prominently in Oshawa during and after WW2 are fast disappearing.

at the Oshawa Airport Southfield:

The 2 large hangars from #20 EFTS of the BCATP are being demolished now. Hangar #1 came down yesterday and Hangar #2 will soon follow.

The 2 small Quonset huts are already gutted for demolition. The smaller one housed the Robert Stuart Aeronautical Collection and Camp X Display until 2001 when it moved to 2 other nearby WW2 buildings which remain. The larger Quonset hut was last used by the Oshawa Flying Club and for storage.

the GM North Plant:

All the buildings in the block bounded by:

Adelaide Ave. E on the north,
Division St. on the west,
Ritson Rd. on the east, and
William St. on the south, are just about down.

The only portion still standing is the section on the north side of William Street, just across from where the old GM headquarters stood. Also the plant that was on the east side of Ritson Road is gone.

Sorry, I don’t have any photos to post. It's a painful sight anyway.

Brian

Was no-one interested in or cognizant of the fact that Heritage Canada funds might have been available for the preservation of at least some of these buildings?

More of Canada's historical past gone to the wrecker's ball.

What's going up in the place of the demolished buildings?...more condos, authorized for developers by greedy, short sighted politicians, looking for a greater tax base?

Shame!
