Default Off the beaten track on the other side

A little out of the normal scope of the forum but can anyone shed some light on what these Germans are doing? I think they are ration carriers. Its Dec 1942 on the French Coast. I'll put the German text from the back of the photo in the next post.

Default Back of photo

Heres the back of the photo. This was collected (amongst some other photos) in France in 1944 by an aunt of mine who was doing something or other for the USAAF.

Correct, they are carrying rations to fellow soldiers manning the Atlantik Wall defences.
