Default MObile Canteen

Here is a pic of the Fordson mobile canteen that the Cdn War Museum acquired a few years ago. Does anybody else have NAAFI, YMCA, etc... canteen truck photos that they wish to share?

this Photo is of an American Red Cross canteen.

A friend sent me this photo when I was building a model of this truck and I have no idea where it originally came from.

Default Canteen photos

What a coincidence! I am collecting photos of Mobile Canteens for a mag article or even a small book! I have several Church Army photos with one that shows Salvation Army and Church of Scotland canteens. I have to go check out the British Red Cross museum as they have a number of photos of BRC canteens. I have also ordered several MC photos from the Imperial War Museum..check their online catalogue for details. However I am waiting for a reply to a query I had as some packets they have have several MC photos in amongst them and I don't want to pay for prints of all of the contents.

On MLU of course I posted the pix of the Church Army Chevrolets and there is also one some time back of a 1940 Ford in England, Canadian YMCA from a 1943 Canadian Ford magazine. I have plonked the photo in the next window.

Here are two threads that also covered the subject:

http://www.mapleleafup.org/forums/sh...ht=church+army
http://www.mapleleafup.org/forums/sh...highlight=ymca

I have asked my pal to scan AN ACCOUNT OF OUR STEWARDSHIP, the Vauxhalll restrospective as there is a YMCA Mobile Canteen Bedford photo in it. You are welcome to a copy.

I also took a photo recently of a preserved Austin K2? National Fire Service canteen at Goodwood Revival if that is of any use. There was also a GMC 6-wheeler canteen doing roaring business! I can pass my horrible photo on to you...I was just getting used to my company camera that day!

I would however be interested in a decent photo of the E83W Food Van...I only have a few horrible lo-res copies. It was one of several donated by Henry and Edsel Ford and the rego dates to summer 1941 onwards.

Default Canteens

I have come across many photos at Cdn Archives but never copied them. They included Royal Canadian Legion, Knights of Columbus, Salvation Army and others, all of whom were operating canteens for the Canadians. There were shots of special vans such as the canteen donated by the Toronto Press Club and which was photographed handing out cups of tea to members of the London Press Home Guard.

Clive, any chance you might have photo references for the N.A. photos? I assume that you search under .MOBILE CANTEEN' online? Or do you use your natural charm and magic 'fluence on the wonderful and helpful staff when you are in the N.A. building?

David,

The photos are not searchable on-line. I doubt that 1% of Archives images are on Archivia and of those less than 2% are viewable on the 'net.
The Archives have contact prints of over 50,000 WWII photos which are kept in 110 'red books'. The photos that I have seen are in these books. It would take me about 30-40 hours to go through all of them looking for these mobile tea-wagons - time I just don't have. I will make a note of the negative numbers, however, as I come across them in the future.

Default Archives

I never cease to be amazed at what what turns up in the Canadian Archives! I suspect the IWM is the same ... Bart quoted two photo/neg numbers for 1940 Chevrolets in W&T however no evidence can be found online for the originals. I have emailed the IWM photo dept to ask them if they assist but no reply so far.

I have to go at some stage up to London, so I will check out the Red Cross Museum and IWM but in the meantime if anyone finds any neg numbers, please advise! However the Church Army were excellent and supplied photos foc, plus a book on their wartime activities. No response so far from the YMCA in London.

Default canteen

There was an article in one of the early editions of the Military Modeler magazine on building a 1/32nd model of this trype of canteen complete with scale drawings and photographs the issue was sometime in the 1970s. I'll dig through my copies tonight and see if I can find an exact reference etc.

Default YMCA canteen

My memory was almost right. The Militarry Modelling magazine for April 1976 contains a three view 1/32 scale drawing of a Humber based YMCA emergency canteen. I could scan and post but I'm not sure what the copyright inplication would be.

Les,
Your van is identical to the one I show at the beginning of this thread. Too bad we can't see the registration number to see if it is the same van!

This may not be a canteen but it is a Salvation Army car or panel van.

'PERTH, WA. 1943'

from the AWM data banks.

cheers

Default JNO

JNO was an Essex rego, starting in July 1941...so these are Dagenham-built wartime E83W chassis. Apparently paid for by the Fords, snr. and jnr. I wonder who did the bodies? Martin Walter of Folkestone?

Default Ford

I gather from Ford of Canada that all the archival material is in Dearborn. Why? 'SLAVE LABOUR'! Yes, the allegations about slave labour in Germany, and the legal actions.
