Default Deerfield

When were you ancesters in Deefield? There was a cousin of a Warner ancester killed by Indians and French leaders during the famous raid.

Depending whose history you read, it was either justifiable violence to recover stolen goods or downright unjustified savagery.

As it says in the documentaries, my ancestors Josiah Rising and Abigail Nims were taken captive as children during the 1704 raid and carried back to Montreal by the Mohawks.

There is a book called Captors and Captives: the 1704 French and Indian raid on Deerfield by Evan Haefeli, Kevin Sweeney. Parts of it are on google books including the list of the victims of the raid (appendix D). Rising, Nims and the Warners are listed on page 285.

Proximity is a b1tch! Yesterday I drove through the reserve on my way around Montreal. And you probably live within sight of the Mercier Bridge.

Here’s a little more family history, this time from the McGillivray side.

The first to arrive in Canada was my 3 x great grandfather Angus Ban McGillivray who appears to have arrived in Quebec City on the 7th Sept. 1786 on the ship “McDonald” Robert Stevenson Captain. The ship carried about 540 Scottish emigrants led by their parish priest the Reverend Alexander McDonell, the founder of the parish of St Raphaels in Glengarry, Ontario. Angus was married to Mary McMaster and they settled on Lot 29 on the 8th Concession of Lancaster Twp., Glengarry Co., Ontario. Angus hailed from Arisaig, Scotland, and was the son of John McGillivray and grandson of Hugh McGillivray.

My 2 x great grandfather, John McGillivray was born in 1788. He married Isabelle Forbes on 26 Feb. 1811 in St Raphaels. The family was living in St. Polycarpe, Quebec where my great grandfather Duncan and grandfather Peter were born.

Isabelle Forbes was born on the 20th of Sept. 1795 and baptized on the 21st in the parish of St. Antoine de la Riviere du Loup, Louiseville, Quebec. On her marriage record, which was written by a Scottish priest, Father Alexander McDonnell, her parents names are given as Donald Forbes and Margaret McGilvrey. On her baptismal record, which was written by a French Canadian priest, her parents names are given as Daniel Forbes and Marguerite Macquilvrai. Her godfather was Joseph Lesage, Captain of Militia

Isabelle’s parents were married on the 26 of May 1789 also in St. Antoine de la Riviere du Loup. Donald’s (or Daniel) parents are Daniel (Donald?) Forbes and Marie Forbes. Margaret’s (or Marguerite) parents are William McGillivray and Isabelle McGillis. This was the second marriage for Donald. The first was to Marie Louise Pichet on 10 Feb. 1772 at Notre-Dame-De-Quebec in Quebec City. His first wife died on the 11 Feb. 1773 from a violent fever five days after giving birth to a daughter Marie Louise Forbes.

Donald Forbes died on 17 June 1805 at age 80 and was buried on 18 June 1805 at the parish of St. Antoine de la Riviere du Loup, Louiseville, Quebec

The Forbes family were from Inverness Scotland. Daniel and Marie Forbes had four children, Willian, Donald, Isabelle and John. All three sons served in the 78th Fraser Highlanders. From the 1763 Rations list, Pte William Forbes served in the Colomel’s Company; Pte John Forbes was in Captain John Fraser’s Company; and Pte Donald Forbes in Captain John MacDonell’s Company. In the marriage between Donald (Daniel) Forbes and Marie Louise Pichet, one of the witnesses was John Chrisholm. There were seven members of the 78th with the name John Chrisholm including a Pte John Chrisholm also in Captain John MacDonell’s Company.

The tread started by Robert Pearce “Meet the Family” got me thinking that I would post some family photos also. However, with the kids all grown up, it seldom happens that the family is all together in the same place at the same time, and it is all but impossible to get a family photo. So I am posting some old family photos of my parent’s families.

The first is my father’s family taken about 1908. My father is the baby on his mother’s knee with my aunt May, uncle Duncan and my grandparents Peter and Ellen.

The second photo is my mother’s family from around 1918. My mother is the baby of the family with my grandparents Thomas and Cordelia, and my aunts Christine (Tina), Regina, Alice, Theresa, and Fabiola; and my uncles Rosario and Joseph. My mother’s oldest sister Anne-Rose died in 1918 at age 16 sometime before the photo was taken.

Default Algonquin Ancestor

On my mother’s side I have an Algonquin ancestor Marie Miteouamigoukoue, my 8 X great grandmother.
She was born about 1631 and was baptized on 6 Nov 1650 in Montréal. She married Pierre COUC dit LAFLEUR on 16 Apr 1657 in Trois-Rivières. She was buried on 8 Jan 1699 in Trois-Rivières.

The house built in 1721 by my 6 X Great Grandparents Josiah Rising and Abigail Nims in Oka Quebec, was one of the locations used on the filming of the movie “X-Men Apocalypse.” Magneto’s house in Poland was in fact my ancestor’s home in Oka.

I was also able to trace Abigail Nims lineage back to 13th century England. One surprise is that I am related to William Stoughton who in 1692 was lieutenant governor of Massachusetts and Chief Magistrate and prosecutor for the Salem witch trials. William Stoughton was the first cousin of my 8 X great grandfather William Smead jr. (Abigail’s grandfather), making him my first cousin ten times removed. William Stoughton and William Smead jr. share the same grandparents the Reverend Thomas Stoughton and Katherine Evelyn Montpeson (my 10 X great grandparents.)
