Any Cultural Studies Academics here?
Hello All,
Us military restorers are a pretty diverse bunch. I am just wondering if that extends to there being any other Cultural Studies researchers on the forum? You never know.... Kind Regards Lionel

What do you want to know?

G'day Jack,
Not so much wanting to know - more like being able to converse with another bird of the same feather! Well at least another Cultural Studies person. A possible improvement on that would be to converse with a Cultural Studies person who appreciates the influence of Social Constructionism. Even better would be a Social Constructionism Realist person who works within the field of Cultural Linguistics. However, that is my being exceptionally picky! Working in isolation is starting to send me further around the twist Kind Regards Lionel

With an apology.....
Gentlemen: I was up very early this morning, facing numerous catastrophes at work, but just happened to log in before I went out the door.
After reading this entree, I have to say....this is one of the funniest I ever had the the chance to read on this forum, from both sides. You made my day! Thanks Lionel and the commentators......cause I still haven't figured this out myself! With apologies to Lionel.....Robert |

Some part of my former life can only agree with you. I am a broken down worn out Parks and Gardens Landscaper. One who never intended going to university as I was a "Tradie" - Tradesperson. I can honestly say that ignorance can be sheer bliss. I had to retrain and due to an eye complaint I was instructed that I could no longer work in dust and dirt - none of that with motor vehicle restoration is there - teehee. Well not 8 hours a day five days a week anyway. So I took a course at university. Then perhaps another one or two or ... As a consequence I now frequently have part of my mind sitting there pointing its finger, laughing at me going, "you are such an academic (the utterance of an inaudible - comment or two) .... Lionel." The tone of voice is not complementary either. Then it says, "what did you used to say about academics?" ... I am too polite to write what I used to think about them here either. To make matters worse - I have two elder brothers, who are both tradies and they both point their fingers at me, they laugh and then say, "Lionel you are such a * % ## oh and an Academic!" Maybe it is their voices in my mind ..... noooooo! So see what happens when you disparage a group of people through ignorance - fate turns around and bites you on your arse! oh and Tradies rool Who wrote that ? .... Kind Regards Lionel

If there are any insomniacs here I may be able to cure it by providing an explanation of my field of study - i won't charge too much "Once upon a time their was a man called Lev Semyonovich Vygotsky who wrote about Thought & Language - he also wrote a book called Fundamentals of Defectology that is widely unknown in the Disability Sector. .... are you asleep yet? Then came a man called Alexander Romanovich Luria who described a method of study called Romantic Science ... Are your eyelids getting heavy yet? Then along came Wittgenstein and Harré ... then came along the "Vygotsky School" of Social Constructionism - Realists"... Then came along the "Cultural Turn within Cultural Studies Snore - snore ... Damn I should have got your bank account details first .... when will I Learn Kind Regards Lionel

Lionel, I think you've found the "other" group.
I suspect that the person (small group?) that you are seeking, will likely contact you by P.M., now. Now, I apologize for my flippancy. I applaud you for having the testicles to ask (......for whatever you asked for?)

Little like talking to my son
Hi Lionel
Your question and the resulting thread reminds me of talking with my son who is a philosophy professor, when we talk about philosophy I reminded him to talk at the introductory class level, for me. When he calls because he can't get his car to run or the lawn mower to start we talk with photos and diagrams. Just different points of reference, but he enjoys driving the CMPs. My kids friends get a kick out of how my daughter will fix plow truck over the phone with me, cell phone cameras are great. They laugh at her calling her dad, until the truck starts, an she points out that I'm cheaper and quicker than the motor club. Cheers Phil Cheers Phil

Phil, I can relate to that. I have a son who is doing his masters in energy management. (he works as a consultant) and another son studying mechatronics. I used to teach them stuff. Now I listen and try to understand.

G'day Lynn, There are at least two fantastic imports from New Zealand - Mainland Vintage Cheese. Also one Horace Romano Harré. "Rom" Harré was born in Apiti, in northern Manawatu, near Palmerston North, New Zealand in 1927. Oh BTW Harré is one of the founders of the Social Constructionism - Realist movement that I prescribe to academic discipline wise . No I will inflict no more torture on any one from this point on. If anyone is interested here is Rom's Wiki-bio .... Accessed September 1st 2016 from, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Horace_Romano_Harr%C3%A9 Kind Regards Lionel

Well Lionel, just reading about him makes my head hurt. This is a track I never expected to look along on MLU. Indeed the road less traveled. I think I will turn back while I remember the way.
