Clarification of which parts are needed
Hi Andrew
Can you clarification of which parts are needed? I was trying to find the parts break out sheets, to see if I could find a source in the states. But I'm really not sure which one you have. In the parts book there are two versions for the enclosed torgue tube design one is cast right into the rear of the transmission case and the other is like the insert in the picture below which is a separated bolt on unit. Also is it just the speedometer drive that is messed up or is the entire rear unit damaged? Hope the picture helps identify which part. If that is not the correct parts sheet give me some more info on the transmission and I'll try and help. I'm working from a Canadian Master Parts book which covers 38-51 so maybe can help ID what civilian Chevys might have the same part. Cheers Phil

All the parts on the back end of the tranny are the same as the commercial half ton parts from the forties. I should have some somewhere but will have to wait till spring to look.

Thanks for the reply
Part off the list is 4 317 rear bearing retainer It is the same as civilian 1 and 1.5 ton enclosed shaft trucks from late 30's to 40's as David stated .Think they sourced a lot of running gear from civilian 1.5 ton for the cab 12 C8's Any help greatly appreciated A few more pics Third shows where the bolt and bearing retainer let go and caved in and cracked cast housing for speedo drive gear. Hasnt left enough undamaged metal to ream and bush hole

Interesting.......
That enclosed rear tranny cover has exactly the same bolt pattern as the CMP part.....so must be interchangeable. So a civilian tranny can be converted to a CMP model with the special CMP open drive shaft cover...... and the speedo gear location is the same..... possibly the part from a civilian speedo gear would also interchange.....
From the enclosed picture you will see the two different models I have come across..... the early model with the fully machined speedo gear is made of very light white metal of some sort.... the later war production are cast steel and the speedo "boss" area is not finished of machined as the speedo gear was fitted to the T-Case.....but they all suffered the same destruction when a yoke bolt worked loose and sheared the mounting bolts and parts of the rear cover...... finding a good rear cover can be a challenge and adds value to the old tranny. Bob Crap ...wrong picture

G/box
it might fit but it would be like buying the wife a new dress, the housing fits BUT then the tailshaft, diff housing could make the exercise very expensive, just like new shoes, hand bag and hair. must have one around here some where will look in the 37 chev wreck for you this w/end .

Using up what was in the system
Hi Bob
I've seen the same thing early transmissions have the entire speedo machining on the end of the transmission and the internal gear. Later have neither the machining, bosses are there but not drilled and tapped. Also there is no gear on the rear shaft. Cheers Phil
