With 4 1/2 round aluminum at 18.6 pounds per foot. the finished reproduction extinguishers will be about the same weight as an original full one, around 14 to 15 pounds. Turning the bottles from solid aluminum is going to be the least expensive option. The machining estimate should be quite close.

If you are making the retaining clamp/band for the mounting bracket I would
be interested in a couple?

Doug

Gerald,
That looks very good, well done !

The real ones are not exactly identical to each other, particularly in the shape of the brass parts. I assume this is because of different manufacturers rather than date related.

Does anyone know if these extinguishers were made in copper rather than brass and was there a civilian equivalent ?
What marks would be typically stamped on these items please.

All of the originals I have examined have bodies made from copper with brass valve heads. They were a standard extinguisher in more than one size so likely civilian and military, rather like the Pyrene type.
I've heard that the Methyl Bromide ate away at the copper over time hence the relative scarcity today.

I have these. They are copper bodied with a brass valve. Not sure what they contained. They were the original type on my carrier at production. They have dates from 1934 and 1936> I was once told they were fitted in Tiger Moths> I used to have a nice one once with a complete label, but sold it prior to contracting this (carrier) disease.
I assume they were Pyrene? (More so after Adrian's post)
Not sure what striking the knob did.

Thanks chaps, this extinguisher had only been described to me as brass at the time of originally posting the enquiry.
Now I've seen it I can see its copper - don't know about markings though.

Tony, I have never seen the dash, just the top edge of it, enough to know its Cab 11 or Cab 12. There is nearly no documentation that I have been able to find. The info is scarce.
When are you in N.Z. next? Email me.

Default Repro Methyl bromide fire ex available in the UK

Hi, I've made a couple for my ferret and have a few spare, i will make to order, also make the brackets. valve and strikers are turned from solid brass and bottles are polyester resin, they are accurate in weight too. youtube search methyl bromide fire extinguisher Brackets are anti tamper and you need a 8mm spanner and a 5mm allen key to remove your precious fire extinguisher! email: gr8cruisers@yahoo.co.uk
