I am building a 1/35 scale Vulcan kit of a Vickers light tank and doing a small diarama similar to the 2 AWM photos below.
I see that the inside of the front covers where the crewmans legs are sticking out appears not to be the silver/white colour of the interior. Can anyone suggest/tell me what this colour would have been? Also the exterior looks to be 2 colour cammo. What colours would these have been? Photo caption says Australian Light Tank Syria 1941. I myself am assuming these would be light stone and british Khaki or similar. I am building this kit now so the matter of colours is fairly urgent and yes I have 2 figures to pose with the tank in the same positions as they are in the photos ![]()

I'll take a shot. Pre-war Lights would have been bronze green. By 1941 you'd expect they would have been re-painted at least once in khaki or dark green (as I think your subject was). Then, the exterior was given a cam pattern in light stone. The inside of the hatch covers (the parts that were visible when open) would be the exterior hull colour, so in your case khaki or dark green, but obviously without the light stone cam. I expect the interior colour would have been aluminum.
were painted the exterior body colour. In you case I Quote:

I agree with Bruce. The bottom hatch would most likely be still in the KG#3 or the darker bronze green. Notice however that the upper hatch in your 2nd photo is semi closed. The verticle part of it appears to have the same paint job as the exterior of the tank.

Cliff
It's a neat little book written by a sergeant, he was in the 9th Div cavalry regiment . They trained on those tanks at Puckapunyal , and were issued them in the M.E., and then fought the Vichy french in Syria using them . You might pick up a copy in an op shop. I think the authors surname is Kerr ? MIKE PS I recall: John Belfield had the remains of two of them at one time . here you are : http://www.awm.gov.au/units/unit_136..._world_war.asp It was published during WW2 while the author was still serving

Hi George. The work shown on your website of the Vickers in progress is awesome. I cannot help with the photos you need unfortunately but I need to tidy up and detail the drivers compartment as some of this is seen in the finished model. I have found the thing that lets this kit down in my eyes is the complicated suspension setup and tracks. Thanks for the help.

Cliff, Not sure if I got you right,
I can help with interior photos, I have masses, plus the works drawings that show the panels. Email me and I can get back to you. Agree about the suspension, there is a company over here, "Sovereign2000" that makes a replacement set, alternatively, anneal those springs to take out the stiffness. They are a bit of a b~~~er though I agree. Email me and I can send the stuff you need. As for the engine, a general enquiry only, I am waiting for a book on early Vickers tank, which I hope will have the answers !!!!! George. |
