Thanks Mark. I wondered if that was him I think Colonel Meldram gave a detention or something to my Uncle ... AWOL... didn't get home before lights out I guess (ouch)

BTW... the point of my mentioning about renting a place is that I'm excited that I'll soon be able to settle in a place, UNPACK my boxes/papers/etc regards my Uncle and "get to work" on this, and other projects, again. Moving in by July 1st. I forgot to mention that part:

Actually the driving ban was not implemented over the whole of the area as first broadcast. We were in Port en Bessin for the day of the 6th and vehicles were coming and going all day. Some of our contingent (MVT) convoyed to Pegasus early that morning and were told that they could not return until 2000 hrs, in fact some returned in the middle of the afternoon with only small detours, so they told me. The French police, gendarmes, etc. were very helpful in fact it was apparent that many were not from the area and were doing the tourist bit, several times I witnessed them looking at memorials, etc and taking snapshots!

Oh, that's part of the collection from the REME Museum which is located at SEME Bordon up the road from Horndean.

Roger Jones always brings a fair selection; I will have to do some digging to be definitive but best I recall there were several Foden wreckers of different variants, several Scammells, a Humber Snipe and a M-C CDSW light recovery.

Talking of Morris-Commercials I have to attach this image for Mike K to drool over; the only driving PU 8/4 in existence, the other one lives in a museum in the US.

While I'm on my feet as it were, I must record that "your" Major "J-C" Boisvert is an extremely pleasant chap and we have made a quantum jump in his knowledge of things Canadian in WWII. I think we provided an interesting day out for the Major and Mrs. Boisvert and although I didn't bump into them again, I'm told they spent a day at Overlord too the following weekend absorbing the sights of some 600 MVs up close and moving.

Also, I must say the Rear Admiral is an absolute gem and a real hoot, after some trepidation at the thought of meeting such a high-ranking officer, and they can be rather stuffy its true; R. Ad. Bawtree proved to be the nicest guy you could wish to meet and a good larf.

Having dutifully made acquaintance with the various reps and organisers, he immediately excused himself and spent some time speaking with the smallest parade members of local Brownies and Scouts to put them at their ease. It was obvious they warmed to him immediately and were not fazed by the dress uniform and copious gold braid that goes with it.

Heart warming stuff.

In a recent audio conversation with Ballard jr, I understand that by democratic concensus of the cabin sharers, having discovered most of the MLU private booze stock quietely secreted away in the communal fridge and thereby occupying 99.9% & 44/100ths of the available volume, was unceremoniously heaved out to make room for real food to sustain the majority.

This was not altogether entirely well received in one particular quarter.

I am also reliably informed that the afternoon MLD nap scenario is still extant; probably because of the historical cultural information overload; we have absolutely no idea what else it could possibly be.

From experience we feel that after today in the land of nearly free French booze (pun intentional), then a longish drive in an old army truck with nothing to do but practice bottle opening, followed by a 6hr ferry trip with even cheaper booze and nothing to do; we fully expect him to be poured back into the Shirrell Heath Sigs Office around 24:00BST today most likely in serious nap mode.

It is unlikely Mr. MLU will be firing anything for a while on his return, unless he inadvertently breathes on his Zippo that is . . . . . . .

You are right...
Colonial officers are diferent from the Imperial British officer corp..
Most of them have farm boy,small town, inter city and similiar common roots..They are just like the little guy ,except they rose to the top in the military..
While there is always some that think that they are little gods most of them are pretty small town ,decent people..
There is no royality in Canada...(As much as our Governor general and Mr.Governor general think they are)....
