Default MLVW info sought

Looking for references, actual documents (i.e., MOST reports, etc..) and hi-resolution photos for the MLVW family of vehicles.

Absolutely! The Weapons of War series is up to 39 titles in print and more in the pipeline.

Hello Clive

I have a manual you can borrow. Not sure how much info is in it though.

I have some photos as well.

Hello Clive

I will put them aside for you.

I remember we had a conversion course for those of us already trained on the 2.5 tons.

we all dreaded having to change a tire.

I think I have (or had) some of that course training package downstairs. I instructed on the conversion courses back around 83. Actually, you did not instruct, you merely assisted, since it was a self taught course for the most part.

I know what you meant about the spare tire removal. I watched as a Brute of a PPCLI tried to remove the tire from the holder....he was literally shaking the whole truck. Yet I, as a 160 pound craftsmen, could remove and replace the spare on the holder without issue. It was a brains over brawn thing.

I picked up an MLVW a few weeks ago, and have been working on it since. It had been in a rollover accident and then cannibalized, so the fun has been trying to find all those little bits and pieces, and get them to fit where they belong. It is slowly progressing.

Default Roll Over

Rob and Clive,
I was in a MLVW roll over in 1985 while doing my TQ3 Infantry with the Militia in Petawawa while I was with the 2 IR RC. 18 troops in the back and 3 in the front. 2 bows kept the whole thing from laying flat on its roof. Luckily someone decided to leave the FNC1's at the bivowac as we were going to the rocket range. I wish I had a photo to show how the roof folded like a beer can. I do have a few pictures from my TQ3 Crewman that might show some CFR's

The info I am seeking is generic; date of intro, date of taken out of service, different SEVs/Qties, etc...
Photo needs are also generic as these are for an upcoming Weapons of War title. If I get enough info I will add to RamTank.ca with CFrs and photos.

Cheers,
C

Clive
I have had no luck finding the MOST pubs which are somewhere in the basement. To date I have only found one issue, along with one portion of the training package.

The MLVW will still be in service in the regular force for another 3-5 years according to the guys who work on them. This is evidenced by the tender requests for parts....the quantities of stock they are looking to buy, considering they are only dealing with about half the old fleet, are considerable. As well, the trucks which were scheduled for destruction, in this area at least, are now being held for cannibalization to keep the remaining fleet operational.

I may be able to help.

I'm the token RegF guy working RSS at a Militia Unit here in the NCR. I think we may even have an MLVW or two, if not, I'm certain one of the other three Units in the Armoury has one. Books shouldn't be a problem. Anything specific you're after? PM me.

Ditto. I will soon have duties including a handful of low-mileage MLVWs. But I am very uncertain what paperwork there is at hand.

One of my challenges is identifying the many SEVs and their relevant ECCs.

I have a large poster downstairs of a MLVW, however I believe it is the prototype/trials truck. The CFR is out of whack for a MLVW, and there are a few anomalies on it.

Note that the mirrors are attached above the doors, the hood is held down with metal catches, there is no heater inlet (heater not installed?), the headlights have no brush guards, and the instruction plates on the side gates are not the long Cdn bilingual type. Also, it does not have a Jerry can holder on the step. Lastly, it is not camouflaged, which a truck from the 80s should have been.

There is something odd on the hood over the hood safety latch....no idea what is going on there.

Could it be a US truck acquired for trial by the MOST office?

Most likely. It does exhibit some of the MLVW traits already, so it's hard to say if this is a US truck with modifications, or a truck built up here. It has the Cdn exhaust, which may indicate it has the 8.2 detroit and the Allison transmission.

If someone were to run the CFR 37735 shown in the photo on the EDR viewer it should give the model and serial number. The CFRs around it could also be checked to see how many were procured.

Default Us m35

CFR 37735 was a 1978 US M35. It was one of two, the other was a 1979.

Rob,
In light of Ed's post on the CFR, can I get a scan of your poster, or a photo without any glare?

Further to the search for MLVW PMO pubs, I had a look downstairs tonight and managed to find one more, so I now have issues no 3 and 4 available for you Clive. But somwhere I know I have the whole works of them in a binder, where they move on to the Iltis and even touch on the HLVW.

While looking I also stumbled onto the 1-1/4 ton truck bulletins for the 1976 gas 5/4 tons. I have issues no 3, 4, 5 and 6 if you ever decide to write about these un-interesting trucks.

Rob,
That's great news. I am really looking for issue #5 (on the Iltis) but ultimately am trying to get copies (or scans) of every edition.
Stuff can be sent to; PO Box 33071, Ottawa, ON K2C 3Y9

Could this be the other one brought up for trials: here is a shot from an article in an old EME journal of a "MLVW under test at LETE----Summer 1980". The CFR is 37730. The truck exhibits no Canadian modifications aside from the shelter and the CFR plate that I can see. Edited to add: It would appear the exhaust is on the wrong side for an American M35. It is possible this truck has been modified to the 8.2 liter engine already, with a stack type exhaust which was later changed.

The article talks about 5 pre-production prototypes. I wonder if these prototypes are the modified US trucks.

As well I have attached a shot of my MLVW as it sits now, although there is that white stuff all over it again, as happens every year around this time.

Another MLVW MOST bulletin fell out of my bookcase today. This one covers modifications for the MLVW, introduces the ILTIS, and touches on the start of the 5 ton replacement project. It is bulletin no5: did you need this one?

I also have the EME journal from sometime around 1980 which covers the MLVW project. I can loan you that as well if you want.

Absolutely!! MOST #5 was an issue that I have been looking for. A future project is the MLVW so all info is welcome.
