Hi David

first one is a Thornycroft WZ/TC4 3 ton 4x2 GS and i am sure the car in the background is a Humber with an unusual rear body conversion the second definatly a commer Q4 3 tonner

cheers
Les

David,

The first photo, in the background, could be a Hillman 10hp van. Second photo is a Commer 3 tonner.

Doohhh

That is the vehicle in the background of first photo. Should have recognised it as I am restoring one :o It is a Humber Snipe, the roof rack made it look like a higher roof line to the rear, hence why I said van originally.

David,

Got one to hand, but where do you think you have missed the 1 from?

Could it be this Contract? T8102 Z4108701 to 4110700 MW GS

Mis-paint

I think that there is a missing central "1" Richard and that your suggestion is correct. In another shot the painters have mashed up "11" on another MW......"Oh heck, we've got a mssing 1 in that number..I'll have to squeeze it in!"

Cheers!

And thanks for the id on the Humber.

Great picture Radek,

By the way, has anyone got an idea hom much Commer Q2's and Q4's are still surviving? I have seen one Q2 before, based in the UK and the one Radek showed. Any 3 tonners surviving?

Alex

Rhino badge

Am I right in thinking that the Rhino badge indicates the 1st Armoured Division please?

PPS 05-02-08 12:48

A newer version of 1st Armoured Div Badge shows a white Rhino facing right in a black upright triangle with a red border.

http://www.army.mod.uk/royalsignals/1adsr/index.htm

Wiki shows the same badge.

Paul.

Numbers

I am debating what these numbers, 81, 82, 84, 87 are...are they in the convoy slots? They could be team numbers. Note headlamps covered over...it seems that each lorry had a number written on a cover.

David,

The numbers you are asking about, are Unit Serial Numbers, for RASC Companies. Although the OY driving up the hill has the sign on the wrong side, the one having its wheel changed is in correct location and you can see the number is painted over a two coloured square. This would be red over green diagonally split, which is the colours for Royal Army Service Corps.

David_Hayward (RIP) 06-02-08 21:54

Ta!

Thanks Richard.

Richard Farrant 06-02-08 22:32

Unit signs

David,

I made a mistake on my last message, re. position of signs, the OY coming up the hill has the sign on drivers side, which is correct, the Divisional sign would be on passenger side. The OY having its wheel changed, has the sign on the passenger side, but it may be on a Pass plate, which was an early fitment, whereby if a vehicle had broken down and was waiting assistance to arrive, the plate was reversed in its holder to show the word "PASS", so that other traffic knew that the vehicle did not require help. Now I have a feeling the Pass plate holder was on the nearside. They were discontinued early in the War, judging by photo evidence.
