David,
The first photo, in the background, could be a Hillman 10hp van. Second photo is a Commer 3 tonner.

I think that there is a missing central "1" Richard and that your suggestion is correct. In another shot the painters have mashed up "11" on another MW......"Oh heck, we've got a mssing 1 in that number..I'll have to squeeze it in!"
Cheers! And thanks for the id on the Humber. |

A newer version of 1st Armoured Div Badge shows a white Rhino facing right in a black upright triangle with a red border.
http://www.army.mod.uk/royalsignals/1adsr/index.htm Wiki shows the same badge. Paul. Last edited by PPS; 05-02-08 at 12:52. Reason: More info found |

I am debating what these numbers, 81, 82, 84, 87 are...are they in the convoy slots? They could be team numbers. Note headlamps covered over...it seems that each lorry had a number written on a cover.

OY having wheel changed. In full kit?

![]() David, The numbers you are asking about, are Unit Serial Numbers, for RASC Companies. Although the OY driving up the hill has the sign on the wrong side, the one having its wheel changed is in correct location and you can see the number is painted over a two coloured square. This would be red over green diagonally split, which is the colours for Royal Army Service Corps.

David,
I made a mistake on my last message, re. position of signs, the OY coming up the hill has the sign on drivers side, which is correct, the Divisional sign would be on passenger side. The OY having its wheel changed, has the sign on the passenger side, but it may be on a Pass plate, which was an early fitment, whereby if a vehicle had broken down and was waiting assistance to arrive, the plate was reversed in its holder to show the word "PASS", so that other traffic knew that the vehicle did not require help. Now I have a feeling the Pass plate holder was on the nearside. They were discontinued early in the War, judging by photo evidence.
