The fate of many
1 Attachment(s)
The Manitoba Agricultural Museum has a HUP tow truck conversion in its collection of vintage vehicles, and they had it out on display last week at the annual Threshermen's Reunion in Austin, Man. I took a few snaps and made up a compo to show what became so many CMPs after the war. As I was taking the snaps, and old farmer came by and remarked that he recalled the trucks were being offered for $300 each after the war, which, he said, was a fair bit of money for a farmer at the time.
Note the various mods, plus what managed to survive on this one. The original instrument panel and controls are all there. |
The first CMP I restored, a cab 11 Ford 15cwt, came from a Farmer who bought it directly from the army in 1946. He charged me the same price that he paid for it then....$300.
I guess the truck price was somewhat high for back then. Most of the stories about war surplus in the area had farmers dragging home aircraft for $10 each. The farmer would sell the engine off for that price, and the fuselage was relegated to chicken coup duty. The runways at McGregeor Manitoba were fliled with surplus vehicles, aircraft and guns for 5 years after the war. I believe it operated as a disposal site until somewhere between 49-52. |
do you have any better pics of the wrecking crane? it looks like a weaver 2 - 3 ton hand crank unit...the same as i plan on using on my 12cab.
