canadian made tanks were their engines canadian made or imported
were the engines for the following canadian made tanks manufactured in canada or imported
1 canadian valantine had a general motors engine, was it made in canada or imported from united states 2 sherman grizzly had ford engine i think? canadian or us import 3 sexton and ram had a continental r-975 engine was it imported or made under licence in canada |
The Ram tanks used R975EC2 Wright engines in the earlier models (Ram I) and the Continental R975C1 in the Ram II. The Grizzly used the Continental R975C1. The Sextons used the C1 radials in the early stages of production and then the R975C4 (Continental) was installed in the last 825 Sextons to leave the factory. The engines were all manufactured in Detroit by Continental Motors. As to the 6-71 Detroit used in the Valentine produced in Canada, I believe they were also sourced from the U.S.

Diesels
The Detroit-Diesel 6-71 engines were all sourced from the Detroit Diesel Plant, in Detroit! :rolleyes The only GMC engines built in Walkerville Plant were 248s, 1940-41. I have never seen any paperwork suggesting that 270 units were ever even thought of being built in Canada, though there is a hint that 248s were to be offered for CMPs in late 1939.
