Cam Plate Rollers

Hi, I had my Cam plate down today to replace the bearings, The ones on the rollers are were pretty past there best, like most carriers these bearings never get lubricated.I Have purchased replacement sealed SKF ones off EBAY for about £5 each, I have replaced the centre pivot bearing no problem and put in a new set of push/pull rods. What I have noticed is that the cam plate shaft rollers the bearing sits in are pretty pitted from previous rust.

I am going to make some new rollers and am sure they would of been hardened. I am thinking of making a set out of stainless steel?, rather than machine steel then hardening them, any one made any before and suggestions for hardening appreciated please or thoughts on a suitable material to use.

Kev.

I made mine from 4140 which work hardens. I have seen it where it has fatigued and cracked and a ceramic tip wouldnt even mark it at the crack.
I would think stainless would be too soft

Bearings

The bearing was an ND 3305 (New Departure) which now is a 6305. I would reccomend a 6305 2rs (with 2 rubber seals) The bearing is from the 6000 series which identifies it as a standard metric bearing (common of the shelf)

Lynn is right on the money. I machined my new rollers from 4140 and had them hardness tested against the original ones and they came up the same(can't quite remember the figure, it was some 20 years ago, I think around 54-56 Rc). They have not given a bit of trouble since. Again, best to go with 2RS bearings, sealed from the factory. With the very little rotation and no speed, they too will last a life time.
