Cab 12 question
This is not part of the recent quiz thread but something which has fascinated me a little over the years.
I was looking at this image of a cab 12 in Canada, which appears in the Ford at Reynolds thread http://www.mapleleafup.net/forums/at...3&d=1350262430 And I notice the conduit on the mudguard (fender) for the side lights. Most of the cab 12s we have here in Australia don't have that, although I have seen some with it... I know the headlamps were fitted with a second bulb as a marking light but was wanting to know whether this was a factory modification and when it first appeared. Those with the conduit have cab 13 style side pinspot lights in the same brackets as cab 13s. I don't know whether they moved on to the pinspot type for the tail lights at that time too... |

I checked Servicepub's factory photos CD and only about five pictures of Cab12's show the use of side markers on the front fenders (both Chev and Ford). Four seem to show the cable fitted on top of the fender without a metal strip protecting it; Only one pic seems to show the ribs on the fenders. This is pic "AT-577", and also shows a cab 13 and Lynx, which seems to suggest the pic was taken in 1942 or later. The pics do seem to suggest that the lights were fitted by the factory (only on the last cab12's I presume) and probably retro-fitted to cab 12's (and 11?) in the field, but I guess the parts list would mention this (?). The markers used are not the small metal ones as fitted to the Cab13, but the bigger rubbolite units as also used at the back on cab 11/12's. Alex |
side marker lite conduit
Here is a photo from the Chevrolet factory showing the wiring conduit and here is a pic before I started restoration showing wiring conduit on 12 cab.

side markers and conduit
Looking in the parts book for 11 and 12 cab no reference number for the conduit ? My 12 cab has the conduit and large rubber housing side and tail lamps and not the smaller metal cab 13 style lights .

Conduit
I reckon I've seen those conduits on the under side of the guards, too... :bang:

Interesting
It's interesting they don't appear in the parts book. The ones I've seen here have had cab 13 style pinspots fitted (possibly retrofitted).
Incidentally if anyone needs the early type Rubber ones I have a few available new old stock. Please PM me for details. |
Good looking vehicles standing out in the rain! OMG!
David Yes, I even care about Blitzs. Must be going soft. :giveup |
Question for Gordons....
In the factory Chevrolet picture........
Did you noticed that there appears to be NO screens on the two front air vents...... ...and there is a 5/8 steel rod brace missing which should be behind the radiator spring guard........ the missing rod runs parallel to the radiator guard upper horizontal pipe..... I was sure that steel rod was on all cab 11 and cab 12. Wondering if that picture is not a very early cab 12 with some mods yet to be scheduled in the assembly process. Cheers Bob C. |
Good spotting Bob

Hi Bob
Yup that bar and the one behind the radiator on the Pattern 12 I think had to be added to keep the front fenders flexing and trying to tear the radiator apart. Do the Pat 11 have this bar as well? Attachment 65359 Ever notice that the screens on all the Chevy Pat 11 & 12 are concave, wonder if they were built that way or just got the way the first time a mechanic climbed up and rested is knee on the brush guard to look under the hood? Your knee just naturally goes to that spot. Cheers Phil |
Raise the bar.......
From the few cab 11 I have seen, including mine, they all had the extra bar to keep the fenders from flying off..... so much so that the Brits call them wings.....
As to the screen for the air vent.... I have a set of NOS that are flat...... I suspect that because Chev are so fast the rushing air eventually deflects the screen to a concave shape..... The cab 12 also had an additional brace bar under the hood above the radiator fan....... I chose to instal one on my cab 11 has it really pulls the side together nicely....... I repro-ed one from a cab 12 and it fits nicely...... should prevent the droopy eye looks of the fenders. Cheers ........ |
To the untrained eye, all that stands out in Gordon's factory photo(aside from the classic look)is the factory fitted oil leak down the diff  When I was an apprentice, if it didn't drip, it wasn't an oil leak. It was a seep!
Back in the day, (WWII) the Americans knew how to build good looking trucks (the WC Dodge for example) (it's a shame they lost their way at the wars end) It is great that you guys are saving the 11 and 12 cabs. They must be fairly thin on the ground these days. |
Side reflectors
What about the reflectors? I see the first post photo shows the pin light brackets are sitting over the frame for the reflectors. Were they added later, or factory?

CMPs don't leak they mark their territory
Hi Lynn
Good spotting on the oil mark, but we all know that CMPs don't leak they just mark their territory. But with a brand new truck you might also suspect that the diff had been over filled. Really easy to do if you are pumping the lube in, then to avoid the mess on the floor you put the plug in real quick. It is always interesting to look at factory photos to see little details. side lamps wire tube (conduit)
3 Attachment(s)
Hi,
In two chevrolet parts lists, CGT-01 of november 1942 and N° 197 of august 1942, I have find the part number of this side lamps wire tube.(conduit) (used with rubber type lamps only) The things that I can't find in this lists are the clips and the RH srews with washers and nuts to hold the tubes in place. See pictures below. |
front side marker lites and conduit
Keith in regards to your question when did they start installing front marker lites on the fenders ? Interesting enough looking at the 1940-41 parts book, there are no front marker lights, brackets or conduit listed, as you mentioned the head lights had both a large main head light bulb and an upper small bulb for the marker light, I have this system and also the large rubber lights mounted on the front fender, so your question when then did they start installing the rubber marker lights ? it must have been after the 1941 model came out, and after the parts book was printed, this catalogue is #175 January 1941, there is a picture of a 12 cab in the parts book with out marker light, bracket and conduit.

Herman, Are the screws and nuts in a "standard hardware" section at the back or front of the book?
|
side lamp wire tube
Lynn,
Of course, each parts list has at the end a section "standard stock" with the different bolts, screws, washers, nuts, cotter pins and so on used in this vehicle. But this list don't tell us what you need for the installation of the tubes. cheers |
