First time posting but thought you would all like this 1968 M38A1CDN2 another Canadian jeep saved from the scrap heap.

This M38 will need some TLC but will be back in service soon. :salute:

Post your progress reports here. There are a lot of guys with knowledge and parts on this family.

Never fails to amaze me the amount of corrosion eaterners have to deal with. At the same time, it appears to be a fairly un-altered example.

Thank you Terry,I certainly will post more. This M38 should be great to work on ,full frame not a unibody like my Canadian M151A2'S that I have been restoring for the past 2 years ,Any info on the CFR service of this M38 would be a good start and a great help .

Hello David that is what I am affraid of,seems that after the secound A2 and 1 M101 a Iltis I told myself this would be it ,but than my wife finds this M 38 and and tells me to buy it, also when paying the guy for the M38 he tells me he knows of 5 other M38A1'S in the same condition sitting in a field not far away and that I could get them all for cheap, now I feel I will need to rescue them also . I am so sick :bang: :doh: :bang:

After restoring this 1985 CDN Iltis I sold it and a not restored M101 trailer to help pay for my addiction,I also vowed to myself to sell no more.

I must agree the Iltis was a money pit that I lost $$$$ on, after purchase and the never ending parts needed to keep it running. I loved driving the M151A2'S while in the military but parts from the US add up fast. It was on the M38 that I failed my first try for my 404's while in the military lol the LT was able to convince the SGT to give me a secound chance to pass the course and I did lol I am hoping the the M38 will be less expensive as parts are more readly avail in Canada and having leads on other M38's not far from home may turn out to be a great help.

Grab the scrappers if you can; they will give you many of the oddbal Canadian type items which add up if purchased individually.
Many M38A1 service items are easily obtainable right here in Canada, some items are right off the shelf at auto parts dealers if you have the civilian cross over numbers.
As far as the Iltis goes, some guys are diehard lovers of these for whatever reason while many of us are not. You hit the nail on the head regarding parts availability- there is none. In the last years of Canadian military service, many Iltis were out of commission having been cannibalized for parts to keep the aging fleet operational. So, if veh techs were having a hard time getting parts for an in service vehicle, how is the supply chain now for an obsolete machine which was surplussed out 10 years ago? Simply, there were not enough of them made to justify vast parts spares nor will there ever be a repro market for said items.

Some guys like to be tied up and whipped, there are people who like to cut themselves, there are people who put piercings in strange places, and there are people who like Iltis's. It takes all kinds to make this world.....ying and yang, normal and oddball.

When you think about it, isn't most of our hobby kind of "yang". Parts are harder to find than for a 57 chevy, our vehicles have a beauty that only we see. It's just that Iltis owners are a little (lot) further over the precipice.

Just got up, and the coffee hasn't started to kick in yet. Perhaps this is why I am being so mellow towards the Iltis this morning.

Chris ,Rob you both hit the nail right on the head the only remorse I had when selling the Iltis was the fact that I had lost soooooooo much money .I paid $4500.00 for the lemon and put $3500.00 extra on it sold it off for $3500.00 to someone who had a parts iltis,Now I see them sitting for sale everywere for $1500.00 to $2500.00, and not moving.I feel so much better now that I see what you guys have to report on the Iltis.I remember how all the guys were so disappointed in our unit finding out that our m151a2's and older M38's were being taken away from us and being replaced by a Iltis :wacko:

Very nice and very impressive.

Now that the coffee has kicked in, I am ready to take on any of the Iltis guys, but I think you covered it well enough, and with first hand collector's experience that is hard to refute.

Rob I would love to see some pic's of the A2 you are restoring and as far as the Iltis goes I would rather let bygones be bygones ,its kind of embarrassing to think of all the money I spent and all the money I lost. :fry: LOL

Great Hanno thank you, I will go back and do the same with the other pictures , as far as the rusty A2 goes I have a friend doing one over in the same condition so we exchange ideas back and forth on the best way to proceed but as I said it is a work in progress the unit was cut in two and welded back together with metal plates and crap. I am Restoring it with mostly all new parts and cut out body parts purchased from Canada the US and Denmark. The fabed up rear fender top's , tunnel cover full A2 rear panels are being produced for the Canadian A2 jeeps by a friend at very good price's in Canada :) If any one needs any replacment pannels let me know and I will get his contact info to you. :)

A few more pic's from 2014 of a replacement frame section I made up :) when the military demilled the jeeps the cut was made ahead of the drivers seat on this unit.

Recieved some of the last pannels from a friend in Newfoundland today ,the panels are hand crafted from original templates also very well priced .If anyone is interested in having any A2 panels made for their projects PM me and I will give you his contact info .Remember no foreign exchange,pay in Cdn $ and all made in Canada panels . :yappy: :thup2:
